SALT LAKE CITY -
The University of Utah women's gymnastics team has achieved what could be an NCAA first: It is believed to be the only woman's team ever to have all of its allowable scholarships funded by its boosters. The Crimson Club Gymnastics Scholarship Circle consists of participants who have funded a full year's scholarship for a Ute gymnast. This is the third year of existence for the program. The first year, six scholarships were given. Last year, eight participants signed on with the program. This year, all 12 scholarships allowed by the NCAA were funded by gymnastics fans.
Says Utah Head Coach Greg Marsden, "This is an important step for our program as well as for women's athletics in general. When we undertook this project I had no idea we'd be able to accomplish our goal in three short years. I think this further demonstrates the acceptance and support there is for women's athletics. This happened at the same time we raised $1.2 million for our new training facility and averaged over 10,000 people at our home meets, which generated almost $250,000."
Over the last seven years, Utah gymnastics has averaged almost 11,000 spectators a meet in the Huntsman Center-a record for any collegiate women's sport. Marsden's teams have won a record 10 national championships since 1981.
