SALT LAKE CITY -
Three gymnasts have signed letters of intent to compete for the Utah gymnastics team beginning next fall. They are Kim Allan of Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Erin Prewitt of Tallmadge, Ohio, and Leah Sabo of Hubbard, Ohio.
Allan is a 1998 Canadian National Team member who competes for Omega Gymnastics. Prewitt and Sabo were both on the 1998 U.S. Junior Olympic National Team. Prewitt trains at FLYTZ Gymnastics and Sabo at Olympic Dreams Gymnastics.
Allan placed third all-around, second on floor and sixth on both beam and bars at the 1998 Canadian National Championships. Her most impressive international showing came at the 1998 Wild Rose International in Edmonton, Alberta, where she finished fifth all-around, third on floor, fifth on beam and sixth on bars. At the 1998 China Motor International Cup in Taipei, Taiwan, she placed ninth all-around, sixth on bars and seventh on beam. She was the British Columbia Association Female Athlete of the Year four years running (1995-98) and the 1997 Premier's Athletic Award recipient in gymnastics.
Sabo and Prewitt placed first and second respectively at the 1998 state meet. Sabo placed 12th all-around and fifth on floor at the 1998 Junior Olympic National Championships. She was third all-around at regionals. Prewitt placed eighth on floor at the 1998 J.O. Nationals. Sabo and Prewitt were two of just six gymnasts chosen to represent their region in an all-star meet in Sweden, where Sabo tied for third on floor. They are both National Honor Society members and Prewitt currently ranks first in her class with a 4.0 cumulative GPA.
"It's a very good class," says Ute Head Coach Greg Marsden. "All three are talented all-around gymnasts who have experience on the national and international level. They should make us stronger in areas where we have been weak and deeper on every event. Kim (Allan) and Erin (Prewitt) are very powerful and are especially good tumblers and vaulters, which is where we've been lacking the last couple of years. Leah (Sabo) is an exceptionally strong performer with an extensive dance background."
