SALT LAKE CITY - Trent Whiting, a junior college All-American guard from Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, has signed a letter of intent to attend the University of Utah and play basketball. The announcement was made today by Utah Head Basketball Coach Rick Majerus.
The 6-1, 180 pound Whiting averaged 18.4 points, 5.8 rebounds and 5.2 assists for Snow this past season. He also shot 50 percent from three-point range. Whiting led the Badgers to the Scenic West regular-season title this year. He was named all-league as well as the Scenic West MVP. He was also named first-team NJCAA All-American and is one of four finalist for national player-of-the- year honors.
Ute coach Rick Majerus is excited to have Whiting join the Runnin' Utes. "We are extremely pleased to have Trent sign with us," said Majerus. "He is exactly the type of player we have had great success with. He is an outstanding student, a true scholar-athlete and a great young man. I like his maturity, his work ethic, his commitment to basketball as well as his commitment to academics. Trent has the capability of playing either backcourt spot and there is no doubt in my mind that he should become a stellar defender. I think his shooting will enable our inside game to be much more effective because of his ability to stretch the defense. I'm also excited about the fact that he is such an outstanding foul shooter, but best of all he is a great, young guy who is very coachable. He has a great desire to excel in the classroom as well as on the court."
A native of Kuna, Idaho Whiting was an outstanding athlete for Kuna High School. As a senior he averaged 24.3 points, 9.4 rebounds, 7.2 assists and 3.4 steals per game. He had a high game of 40 points. He was a two-year first team all-State selections and was named league MVP. He carried a 3.85 GPA in high school and was on the honor roll.
After his freshman year at Snow, Whiting served a two-year church mission to Brazil. He is the son of Bill and Sandy Whiting of Kuna.
