SALT LAKE CITY -
Utah's season opening gymnastics meet brought back memories--good and bad--of the Utes' last meet of 1999. Reminiscent of eight months ago in the Huntsman Center, Utah was solid on vault, rocked on bars and hit big on floor, but fell apart on beam. Luckily, three good events was good enough for the Utes this time, who beat a mistake prone Utah State team 195.650-190.375 before a crowd of 9,336 in the Huntsman Center. Two falls and a wobble or two on the beam wasn't nearly as devastating as it was last April, when a bad beam set cost Utah a shot at the NCAA Championship.
Led by defending NCAA all-around and balance beam champion Theresa Kulikowski, who won both those events again (as well as two others), Utah pulled away in the last three events from the Aggies, whose only good event was their first. Kulikowski equaled her winning collegiate debut score of last season, when as a freshman, she won the all-around with a 39.40 against Stanford. She also won bars (9.975), beam (9.825) and floor (9.875). "Kulio" led a Ute sweep of the individual event titles, as sophomore Kylee Wagner picked up her first win ever with a 9.775 on the vault.
A solid night on vault to open the meet was just enough to give Utah the lead over a nice Aggie bar set. The Utes would expand on their three tenths of a point lead (48.775-48.450) on the next event after a huge bar night that saw the last five Utes score a 9.875 or better. Despite a rough go on the beam, where the absence of junior All-American Shannon Bowles was the most sorely felt, Utah improved its edge to nearly three points after three events. Bowles is out indefinitely after breaking her neck in practice eight weeks ago. When Utah bounced back to hit floor (49.075), the lead ballooned to its final five-plus point bulge.
