THIS WEEK: The University of Utah women's soccer team opens the 2000 Mountain West Conference schedule in Albuquerque at New Mexico Tues., Oct. 3 at 5 p.m. Utah then faces in-state rival Brigham Young Sat., Oct. 7 at 1 p.m. at Ute Field.
PREVIEW: The Lobos are sitting at 5-6 after losing to Texas A&M 3-1 at College Station, Texas. Jayme Dieringer scored the lone UNM goal. She is the team's season goals and points leader with four and 10 respectively. The Cougars (8-3-1) are ranked No. 23 by the SoccerBuzz. Recently they beat formerly ranked No. 25 Arizona State 5-1 and tied No. 10 Southern California 1-1. Three Cougars have double-digit point totals. Michelle Peterson leads the way with 23 points.
LAST WEEK IN REVIEW: Ranked No. 10 Southern California (8-1-1) snapped Utah's (7-4-1) six- game win-streak, 4-1 at Ute Field. Utah struck first on junior Amy Kofoed's 11goal of the season. It came in the 24th minute from a pass by freshman Amber Brower. The Trojans then rambled off the next four goals to earn the win. USC took advantage of two penalty kicks to lead 2-1 at halftime. Isabelle Harvey and Andrea Warner converted the attempts. Jennifer Prigmore scored in the 70th minute, and USC capped the scoring with a late goal right at the end of the game. The Utes were given a red card and two yellow cards in a physical game, but seemed to lose some composure at times. Fouls were lopsided with USC getting nine more infractions, but Utah was out shot 25-7. Courtney Hills had nine saves in the net for Utah, however, the barrage on goal was too much for the goalkeeper to handle.
TAKE NOTE: Junior Amy Kofoed is tied for the MWC lead in points with 23. She leads the conference in goals scored tallying 11. Freshman Amber Brower and sophomore Maren Harper are tied for the team lead with five assists each. Harper tied the Utah school-record for assists in a single game with three against Nevada.
COMING UP: Nevada-Las Vegas and San Diego State come to Utah Oct. 12 and 14 at 4 p.m. and 1 p.m. respectively.
