SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's soccer team (11-6-1, 4-2 MWC) grounded the Air Force Academy (3-13-1, 1-4 MWC), 2-1, and earned the second seed into the Mountain West Conference Tournament Nov. 1-4 at Las Vegas.
After a scoreless tie at halftime, sophomore Katie Tate ripped a ball into the net just over a minute into the second frame to give Utah a 1-0 lead. Tate took a feed from junior Amy Kofoed on the tally. Five minutes later, sophomore Shauna Gurr took advantage of a rebounded shot off the cross bar by Tate and put the Utes up 2-0. Air Force's Beth Boyer was given a scoring opportunity from 30 yards out on a free kick, and capitalized with a beautiful shot to close the gap to 2-1. With the exception of the costly foul, Utah's defense controlled the game and inevitably closed out the remainder of the game.
Junior goalkeeper Courtney Hills had another solid performance, turning in six saves. Utah out shot the Falcons 22-11.
"I was proud of our defensive effort," said Coach Amy Winslow. "We got numbers to the ball quickly and our back four played very well. Courtney also played well. We battled today and we played hard in rainy, freezing weather."
Utah will have a week off to prepare for the post-season.
