SALT LAKE CITY-- The University of Utah women's soccer team (7-6-1, 0-2 MWC) lost its sixth straight game to Brigham Young University (10-3-1, 2-0 MWC), 5-2 at Ute Field in front of 1,037 in attendance.

After playing to a 1-1 halftime deadlock, BYU exploded for four goals in the second half. Mountain West Conference scoring leader Michelle Peterson recorded a hat trick, while compiling seven points on the afternoon for the Cougars. She scored a minute into the contest to put BYU out front early. Sophomore Katie Tate answered the goal in the 15th minute when sophomore Shauna Gurr played a cross from left to right off the head of freshman Amber Brower. Tate finished the play with a high kick into the upper left of the Cougars' goal. Utah goalkeeper Courtney Hills warded off four shots during the remainder of the period, in which BYU out shot Utah 10-2. In the second half, BYU's athleticism proved to be too much for the Utes. Peterson ripped the net in the 51st minute and again in the 68th to garner the scoring feat, while Kim Lowe and Athelia Graham both found the net. Freshman Missy Dennis beat goalie Jennifer Waldron on a penalty kick to close the gap for Utah, but that was as close as they would get.

"Our intensity changed big time from the opening half to the second. Our teamwork and support of each other also changed," said Head Coach Amy Winslow. "We need to work on our team unity. Right now we're not competing. We're trying to play as individuals."

The setback puts Utah on a three-game losing streak, right after the Utes reeled off six straight victories.

Utah hosts a pair of MWC games next weekend for its last home stretch of the season. Nevada-Las Vegas and San Diego State come to Ute Field Thurs., Oct. 12 at 4 p.m. and Sat., Oct. 14 at 1 p.m. respectively.
