Salt Lake City - Utah defeated the Southern Utah Thunderbirds, 5-2, at home in a single-game match-up on Wed., Apr. 26. Utah moves to 32-20 overall, 10-4 in the MWC. Southern Utah is now 14-34 overall.
Senior Sunny Smith hit a two-run home run in the third inning. Smith was 2-for-3 at the plate with one run and two RBI. She continues to break Utah's single-season record for home runs with the record now at 16. Sophomore Molly McLean was 2-for-3 with two runs and two stolen bases. Lyndsey Trevis was 2-for-3 with a double and one run. Freshman Nikki Hayhurst was a perfect 2-for-2 in the game. Utah totaled nine hits in 27 at bats, five runs and three RBI. Kristin Arbogast tallied the win for the Utes, pitching seven innings, giving up 11 hits, two runs, two walks and struck out four. Arbogast improves to 30-16 overall.
Southern Utah was led by Kelly Grundy. Grundy was 3-for-4 at the plate. Teammate Emily Cederholm was 2-for-3 with one run. Renee Hietbrink recorded the loss for the Thunderbirds. Hietbrink is now 8-19 overall. Southern Utah had 11 hits in 30 at bats with two runs and two RBI.
Coming Up: Utah hosts New Mexico on Fri., Apr., 28 at 1:30 p.m. (DH) (MST) and Colorado State on Sat., Apr. 29 at 12:00 p.m. (DH) (MST). The Utes finish their regular season at home vs. Brigham Young in a doubleheader match-up at 12:00 p.m.
