SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's basketball team had another successful year in the classroom as well as on the court in 1999-2000 under head coach Rick Majerus. Seven Utes earned spots on the spring semester honor roll, while senior Hanno M?tt?l? was named to the CoSIDA/GTE Academic All-American team for a second consecutive season.
Named to the spring semester honor roll with at least a 3.00 grade point average were starters Nate Althoff and M?tt?l?, reserves Mike Puzey and Adam Sharp, redshirts Chris Burgess and Nick Jacobson, and walk-on Seth Black. Althoff, Black, M?tt?l?, Puzey and Sharp were additionally distinguished by making the Dean's List with a 3.50 GPA or better.
With M?tt?l? earning third team Academic All-America honors, Utah leads all NCAA Division I men's basketball programs with four Academic All-America selections in the last three years. Twenty-one players have made the honor roll a combined 121 times during Coach Majerus' 11-year tenure at Utah.
In addition Jeff Johnsen, Jeremy Killion, M?tt?l?, Puzey and Sharp earned Academic All-Mountain West Conference recognition. Puzey and Sharp were also named Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athletes in 1999-2000.
Two seniors, Killion and M?tt?l?, received their bachelor's degrees from the University of Utah on May 5. The remaining members of Utah's 2000 senior class: Alex Jensen, Tony Harvey and Brandon Sluga, are also on track to receive their degrees.
Utah finished with a 23-9 record and won the inaugural Mountain West Conference championship in 1999-2000. It was the sixth consecutive conference title and the eighth overall under Coach Majerus. The Utes also received an invitation to the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time in the last 11 seasons. Utah is one of just six schools that have advanced to the second round of the NCAAs in each of the last six years.
"It has certainly been another rewarding year on the court, but again we have accomplished our greatest success in the classroom," says Majerus. "In addition to winning the conference championship and playing into the second round of the NCAA Tournament, we are most pleased with the graduation of our seniors and excited for those who have achieved a high academic status among their peers.
"Once again, we have had mutual success in both areas, and I am so proud of our players for what they have achieved this year," continues Majerus. "I am particularly pleased with the efforts of Chris Burgess and Nick Jacobson, both of whom reside on the honor roll despite the fact that they had a difficult year in having to sit out. At Utah, we never close the book on a successful season until the grades have been rendered and the academic status of our players has been ascertained. The expectation of our players is that they fully realize their potential as student athletes."
