SALT LAKE CITY -
NO. 1 AND 2 GYMNASTICS TEAMS TO MEET THIS WEEK
The University of Utah women's gymnastics team shot to No. 1 in the latest national rankings, but the Utes' new status will be tested right away. Utah, which finished second at last April's NCAA Championships, will face 2000 NCAA champ and No. 2 ranked UCLA in Los Angeles, Sunday.
There's an asterisk on Utah's ranking. The latest poll is based on high score and Utah's 196.200 on January 5 edged UCLA's 196.200 on the same date. However, UCLA scored a 196.825 in a win over Cal State Fullerton on January 15-a meet that finished too late to be counted in the new rankings.
Both teams look different than when they met at the 2000 NCAA Championships. Back from injury for Utah is 1999 NCAA all-around and balance beam champion Theresa Kulikowski and All-American Shannon Bowles. Both are former U.S. National team members and Kulikowski was the alternate to the 1996 U.S. Olympic team. The Bruins' freshman class includes 2000 U.S. Olympic team members Jamie Dantzcher and Kristen Maloney, as well as alternate Alyssa Beckerman. The Bruin lineup also features two-time Canadian Olympian Yvonne Tourek. The Utes and the Bruins will square off in Pauley Pavilion on January 21 in a meet that will be televised live back to Salt Lake City on KJZZ starting at 3 p.m. Mountain time.
