The Utah women's gymnastics team is ranked No. 4 in the preseason coaches poll. Utah, the 2000 NCAA runner-up, received 632 points and three first place votes. Defending NCAA champion UCLA led the way with 718 points and 22 first place votes, followed by Georgia (674) and Michigan (647). Utah's three first place votes tied it with Georgia for second, while Michigan received one first place vote. Only the top four teams received first place votes. Rounding out the top 10 were Alabama (614), Nebraska (553), Stanford (495), Louisiana State (490), Penn State (464, tie) and Florida (464, tie).
Utah's 2001 schedule is well represented in the poll. The Utes will face nine ranked teams this year in No. 1 UCLA, No. 3 Michigan, No. 9 Florida, No. 11 Arizona State, No. 12 Oregon State, No. 15 Brigham Young, No. 16 Washington, No. 18 Minnesota and No. 20 Arizona. Utah's remaining four opponents were all listed as receiving votes: Southern Utah, Utah State, North Carolina and George Washington.
