SALT LAKE CITY -
Two future University of Utah gymnasts will be competing in the 35th annual Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, held from October 28-November 4 in Ghent, Belgium. Gritt Hofmann and Crystal Gilmore will be competing for Germany and Canada, respectively.
Hofmann is expected to join the Ute team in late December, while Gilmore will enroll in the University of Utah at a date to be determined (not this season).
The two future Utes will be among 570 gymnasts (244 women) from 68 countries competing at the World Championships. People wishing to follow the event can log on to http://www.gymmedia.com/ghent2001/index.htm or http://www.intlgymnast.com/.
Hofmann, a member of German National Team since 1994, is competing in the World Championships for a fourth time. She also competed for Germany in the World Championships in 1996, 1998 and 2000. At the 2000 German Championships, she placed first on floor, second on beam and fourth in the all-around. She was second on vault, beam and floor at the 1998 national championships and 14th all-around at the 1998 European Championships. The 1997 German all-around champion also won vault, beam and floor. She currently is a member of the club team Sport Club Berlin (SCB), which was the national team champion in 1995, '96, '97 and '2000.
Gilmore, a member of the 2000 Canadian Olympic team, announced her intention to compete for the University of Utah gymnastics team last spring when she signed an official letter of intent. However, she plans to continue training and competing for the Canadian National Team for an undetermined period of time. Once she feels she has fulfilled her commitment to the Canadian National Team, she will join the Ute gymnastics team.
The native of Cambridge, Ontario, helped Canada to a best-ever ninth-place team finish at the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. She finished seventh in the all-around at the 2000 Canadian Olympic Trials and placed fifth in the all-around at the 2000 Canadian Championships.
Gilmore, 17, has represented Canada at numerous other international competitions, including the 2000 Team Challenge and Mixed Pairs in France, the 2000 Moscow World Stars and the 1998 World Youth Games in Russia, the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg and the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Malaysia, where Canada won the bronze medal.
