SALT LAKE CITY -
Utah head gymnastics coach Greg Marsden is saying big things about a little freshman class. The "class" contains just one gymnast at the moment, though it will double by late December. The two rookies should bring a lot to the Ute program.
Annabeth Eberle, a freshman from Reno, Nev., was one of the most highly recruited athletes to enter college gymnastics this year. She is a seven-year National Team member who has competed for the U.S. in several international events. Before joining the Utes, she was coached by Derick Moellenbeck at Starz Gymnastics in Reno.
Marsden says this about Eberle: "Annabeth joined the team in August, only one week after having wrist surgery. Her progress since then has been consistent and, in fact, rather remarkable. She is still a little behind in her training on the uneven bars, but that will be resolved as the season progresses. Annabeth seems poised to make a big impact on collegiate gymnastics. She is a very hard working, self disciplined young woman and probably the most athletic member of our team in several years. She is a powerful performer who is physically intimidating and attacks every apparatus. I can't wait for our fans ... and our opponents ... to see her."
The freshman class will "bulk up" to two in late December when Gritt Hofmann joins the team. Hofmann has been a member of the German National Team since 1994. She has been coached by Wolfgang Riedel and Hiedrun Effler at Sport Club Berlin. Earlier this month, Hofmann competed at the World Championships in Ghent, Belgium, where she helped Germany to an eighth place finish. She will join the team in late December.
Marsden has this to say about Hofmann: "Gritt is a talented athlete with a lot of international experience. She will make a significant impact to our program. She comes to us from the same club that produced (former Ute All-America gymnast) Angelika Schatton. To be honest, I don't know what to expect until Gritt arrives. She has had a physically grueling preparation for World Championships and appears to be a little beat up. She will also have to re-acclimate to the old vaulting horse. The international gymnasts have gone to a much different vaulting surface. Depending on our circumstances, there is a chance we may choose to redshirt Gritt. That way we could make sure she was fully prepared to make the kind of contribution to the team that she is capable of making."
