Ute Gymnasts Start NCAA Championships Competition Tonight

The Utah gymnastics team kicks off its record 20th NCAA Championships competition tonight at 7 p.m. ET in Athens, Ga. The Utes will compete in a session with host Georgia, Nebraska, Stanford, Arizona State and Denver. Just three teams will advance out of tonight's meet to the NCAA Super Six, tomorrow night. The afternoon session, which will also produce three team qualifiers to the Super Six, contains UCLA, Alabama, Michigan, Florida, Oregon State and Oklahoma.

Head Coach Greg Marsden, his team and staff, arrived in Athens Tuesday night. The Utes participated in a practice session on the competition floor yesterday. A casualty of the practice was backup vaulter and bar worker Leah Sabo, who suffered a minor knee injury. Junior All-America all-arounder Shannon Bowles came down with the flu, but feels better today and plans to compete.
The Utes will open competition with a "bye", then move to floor and vault. They'll have another bye following the vault, before finishing on bars and beam. It is the same rotation Utah drew for the NCAA Regional Championships on April 7.
