SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah men's basketball program has reached an agreement with Alabama to play a home-and-home series over the next two seasons. The announcement came Saturday from Ute head coach Rick Majerus.
The first game of the series is scheduled for Nov. 27, 2001 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Crimson Tide are expected make a return trip to the Jon M. Huntsman Center during the 2002-2003 season.
Alabama went 25-11 overall last season and advanced to the finals of the NIT where it lost to Tulsa, 79-60. The Crimson Tide also placed third in the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference with an 8-8 record. Alabama is expected to return its top six scorers from last season.
The series was pursued by Majerus in an effort to get senior guard Travis Spivey, a native of Myrtle Beach, S.C., a game close to home.
"We're very pleased to sign this two year contract with Alabama," said Majerus. "We're excited about the opportunity to play a team like Alabama, which has a national presence. They have two Wooden Award and All-America candidates returning in Gerald Wallace and Rod Grizzard. We continue to play a national schedule and are excited about this agreement, with the possibility of it continuing on even beyond the original two-year deal."
"One of our primary concerns was to take Travis Spivey close to home, as well," Majerus continued. "This gives Travis' family, friends and prep coaches an opportunity to watch him play. It should be a terrific contest and one that I expect our fans will look forward to on the return swing."
