Salt Lake City - The Utes came out in the first inning of game one to take a 4-0 lead on a grand-slam by sophomore Niki Hayhurst. Utah defeated the Cougars, 14-7 in the first game and struggled with BYU's pitcher Maryon DeWitt, as the Cougars cruised to a 5-1 win in the late game on Fri., May 4, at Ute Field. Utah moves to 35-21-1 on the season, 11-6-1 in MWC play. BYU has a 30-23 overall record, 9-6 in the MWC.
Hayhurst went 2-for-4 with a home run, three runs and four RBI, while junior Molly McLean went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, three runs and one RBI. Freshman Melissa Stahnke set the Utah single-season RBI (60) record today after going 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, three runs and two RBI. Kristin Arbogast went the distance on the mound, giving up nine hits, three earned runs, seven walks and struck out five in 40 batters faced. As a team, the Utes went 10-for-33, with 14 runs and eight RBI in the game.
For the Cougars, Brooke Cadiente went 3-for-5 with a home run, one run and three RBI. Meghann Pricer took the loss for BYU. She drops to 11-6.
Brigham Young scored first in game two, and the Utes were unable to put the runs on the board. Cougar pitcher DeWitt gave up only four hits, one earned run and one walk, while striking out eight Utes on the day. Arbogast took the loss for the Utes in game two, she moves to 27-16 overall. Junior Michele Larsen hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough as BYU went on to win.
"I think DeWitt (Maryon) started out really well in the second game on the mound," said Head Coach Mona Stevens. "She pitched a good game for the first few innings and we just couldn't quite get our bats out. We didn't make very good decisions at the plate and I think we played into that a little bit for her. I think we played a little tighter in game two and lost focus at the plate. We've got two more tomorrow and we'd like to win both of them."
UP NEXT: On May 5th, Utah will play Brigham Young at 12:00 p.m. (DH) in Provo, Utah. The Utes will vie for their second-consecutive MWC Tournament Championship on May 10-12, in Albuquerque, N.M.
