SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah men's basketball team will see some breathtaking sights as well as get a jump start on preparations for next season when the players and coaching staff take a 19-day tour through Europe. The team departs on May 19 and returns on June 6.
Head coach Rick Majerus will be back with the team after missing most of the 2000-01 season on a leave of absence. The Utes are expected to play eight games overseas after tuning-up for the trip with 10 days of practice in Salt Lake City beginning this week. As per the usual team policies, all practices will be closed to the public.
The Utes depart from Salt Lake City on May 19 and arrive in the Canary Islands on May 20. After playing two games against local club teams in La Palma, the Utes will make their way to Gran Canaria on May 23 for a game. On May 26 the team heads to Barcelona, Spain, where it will play up to four games through May 30. The next five days the team will be in Marseilles and Nice, France, playing one or two games before returning home on June 6.
Under NCAA rules, Division I basketball teams are allowed to make a foreign trip every fourth year. Members of the previous year's team--which excludes incoming student-athletes--are eligible to make the trip. The Utes last made a foreign trip in the summer of 1997.
