SALT LAKE CITY - Britton Johnsen scored 20 points and Travis Spivey had seven of his 15 points in the last 3:03 as Utah survived a late rally to beat BYU 71-66 on Monday night.
The Utes (15-3, 5-0 Mountain West) extended their winning streak to 12 straight and beat BYU (12-6, 2-3) for the eighth straight time in Salt Lake City, but this one didn't come easy.
Spivey rescued Utah after the Cougars pulled within 60-57 with 3:22 remaining after Daniel Bobik made one-of-two free throws. But Spivey scored five straight and had a big steal to help the Utes go ahead 65-57.
Travis Hansen led BYU with 22 points while Matt Montague had 13, but the Cougars fell to 1-6 on the road.
The Utes took control midway through the first half and seemed close to locking up a win with a 53-43 lead after BYU center Eric Nielsen, who scored 10, fouled out with 8:36 remaining.
But Utah played a sloppy second half, committing seven of 11 turnovers after taking a 34-22 lead at the break. And the Cougars stormed back until Spivey and Trace Caton added two free throws each in the final 19.6 seconds.
BYU cut the margin to 50-56 with 3:52 remaining on Mark Bigelow's two free throws. Bigelow, BYU's leading scorer with a 16.5 average, was limited to four points and lost the ball to Spivey on a key possession with 2:47 to go.
Utah started the week leading the nation in 3-point shooting at 44.8 but the Utes went 2-for-9 in the first half. They finished 4-of-18, 22 percent.
Even with Nieslen out, BYU stayed within striking distance and pulled within 53-45 on Montague's bucket with 8:09 remaining.
The Utes pulled away from a 17-17 tie midway through the first half with a 14-3 run over a six-minute span. That burst included two free throws by Jeff Johnsen and four straight Utah baskets.
