The University of Utah women's gymnastics team has received a No. 5 ranking in the preseason coaches' poll. Utah, which tied for fifth at the 2001 NCAA Championships, received two first place votes. UCLA, winner of the last two NCAA titles, was picked No. 1 in the coaches' poll, followed by Georgia, Michigan, Alabama and Utah. Rounding out the top 10 were Nebraska, Florida, Stanford, Arizona State and Oregon State.
The Utes will open their 2002 campaign on Jan. 11 against Ohio State in the Smith's Challenge Cup. Utah has three home meets scheduled in January and three in March. The Utes will be on the road the entire month of February.
Utah returns seven All-Americans, including three-time NCAA champion Theresa Kulikowski, a junior, and two-time NCAA Region Gymnast of the Year Deidra Graham, a senior. The other five All-Americans returning for Utah are seniors Shannon Bowles and Kylee Wagner, junior Kim Allan and sophomores Veronique Leclerc and Melissa Vituj. Senior Lindsay Tanner and sophomore Annie Medcalf were also in Utah's lineup at the NCAA Championships.
