SALT LAKE CITY -
Annie Medcalf, a member of Utah's gymnastics team from 2001-02, had a promising career cut short when a tumor was discovered in her vertebra. She underwent surgery last spring that required the fusing of five vertebrae, along with the removal of the tumor. Medcalf, a former U.S. National Team member from Stow, Ohio, has remained with the Utah team as an undergraduate student-assistant coach while she completes her academic degree. She is also writing a weekly diary.
The UTES had another good week of workouts. It was the first full week of routines and the team handled it very well. The gymnasts have moved their vaults from the pit to the competition setting. About half the team is doing 10.00 vaults at this point, which is really exciting, and the rest are working hard to upgrade. Everyone has been looking strong.
On bars, Aki has had the team doing routines with a watered down dismount, but a few have actually done their competition dismounts. The beamers are looking fantastic too and Megan is doing a wonderful job getting the team ready for the competitive season. Our floor is also beginning to take shape. About half of the Red Rocks have done full sets and the rest of the gang is on their way!
I can't believe this semester is almost over. After we get back from Thanksgiving break, we have one more week of practice, then finals and we're off for Christmas break from Dec. 14-27. Then with the new year comes the new season. We can't wait!
Oh yeah, can't forget this . . . The Utes will be having their annual RED/WHITE meet on Saturday, December 7 at 2:00 p.m. in the Dumke Gymnastics Center. So, mark it down on your calendar folks, because we want a full house! Our team poster should be ready for distribution and the team will be available to sign autographs and take pictures with our fans after the meet. So bring your camera.
Other than that, not much has happened lately. The team is working hard in school and trying to have a little fun every once in a while. We all went to the UTAH vs. BYU football game on Saturday and had a blast! Of course the Utes kicked butt.
We are also getting anxious for the Thanksgiving break and looking forward to seeing our friends and families. Today is our last workout until next Monday, so just about everyone is either going home or somewhere else fun, but I'll tell you about that next week. I hope you all have a safe and relaxing holiday. And, while you are eating that turkey don't forget to Laugh a lot, Love a lot, and Live a lot!
GO UTES!
