Utah takes a week off for Christmas before facing No. 2 Alabama in the Huntsman Center on Dec. 30 at 7:07 p.m. (MST). The contest opens a five-game homestand to close out the nonconfernce schedule.
Quickly On Utah
The Utes (6-3) wrap-up a three-game road swing and two games in California against San Diego (6-3) on Monday at 7:05 p.m. (PST) at the Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego, Calif. The game will be broadcast on KALL-910 AM and the Utah Sports Network.
After starting the season 2-2, Utah has won four of its last five. After falling to Utah State 59-54 on Tuesday night in Logan, Utah, the Utes rebounded Friday with a 77-61 defeat of Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif. Utah is 2-3 away from home this season, including a 1-1 mark on opponents' home courts.
Three Utes are averaging double figures in scoring. Senior forward Britton Johnsen (6-10, 210), who is out until at least mid-January with a torn ligament in his right thumb, paces Utah in both scoring (14.0 ppg) and rebounding (6.8 rpg). Junior center Tim Frost (6-10, 236) is second both in scoring (13.1 ppg), shooting 50.0 percent from the field, and rebounding (5.0 rpg) average. Junior guard Nick Jacobson (6-4, 200) ranks third in scoring (12.7 ppg), and is shooting 44.2 percent from three-point range (23-for-52) and 87.5 percent from the free throw line. Freshman point guard Tim Drisdom (6-3, 203) leads the Utes in assists (3.7 apg) and three-point percentage (52.4).
Scouting San Diego
The Toreros are 6-3 after getting a 73-62 win over UC Riverside at home on Saturday. Winners of two in a row, San Diego also defeated UC San Diego 105-62 on Dec. 14. Before the win over UCSD, the Toreros lost at Brigham Young (64-49) on Dec. 11.
San Diego opened the season with three consecutive wins, defeating Nevada at home on Nov. 23 (77-75) and getting road wins over UCLA on Nov. 26 (85-81 in OT) and UC Riverside on Nov. 30 (84-64).
Three players are averaging in double figures. Senior center Jason Keep (6-10, 280) is first in scoring (18.0 ppg), shooting 66.3 percent from the field, and second in rebounding (8.4 rpg). He also has 11 blocked shots. Senior forward Jason Blair (6-7, 230) is second in scoring (17.2 ppg) and first in rebounding (9.3 rpg). Senior guard Roy Morris (6-2, 182) is third in scoring (13.1 ppg) and first in assists (3.9 apg). Morris also shoots 37.2 percent from three-point range (16-of-43). Freshman forward/center Nick Lewis (6-10, 235), the fourth-best scorer on the team (9.9 ppg) who has played off the bench, tore the MCL in his left knee last Tuesday and is expected to be out three weeks.
Head Coach Brad Holland
Brad Holland is 132-102 in his ninth season at San Diego and 155-133 in his 11th year as a head coach. He has led the Toreros to back-to-back 16-13 records the last two seasons.
In 1999-2000, Holland led USD to a 20-9 record and a 10-4 WCC finish. In 1998-99, San Diego went 18-9. Both years he was named the West Coast Conference Coach of the Year.
Holland played collegiately at UCLA 1975-79 and was part of four Pac-10 championship teams. He was drafted by the L.A. Lakers in 1979 and later returned to UCLA as an assistant coach under Jim Harrick 1988-92. He was the head coach at Cal State Fullerton for two seasons (1992-94).
Utah-San Diego Series Notes
* The Utes and Toreros meet for the third time on Monday. The series is tied 1-1.
* Both of the previous games have been played in Salt Lake City. Utah won the last meeting, 75-57, on Jan. 2, 1989. San Diego won the first contest against the Utes, 60-57, on Nov. 28, 1986.
* Rick Majerus will face San Diego for the first time on Monday.
* San Diego is the third of four West Coast Conference teams the Utes will face this season and the second in four days. The Utes lost to Gonzaga in the first round of the Maui Invitational and defeated Pepperdine on Friday night in Malibu. Utah also hosts Saint Mary's on Jan. 6.
* Utah is 48-17 all-time against West Coast Conference teams.
Game #9 Rewind
Nick Jacobson scored 19 points, including 14 in the second half, as Utah beat Pepperdine 77-61 on Friday night in Malibu, Calif.
Jacobson hit 9-of-11 free throws and 2of-5 three-pointers, playing all but one minute. Tim Frost scored 13 and had 10 rebounds to get his first double-double of the season for the Utes (6-3). Cameron Koford had a season-high 10 points and a career-best six blocked shots. Marc Jackson was also in double figures with a career-high 10 points and four rebounds.
Alex Acker led Pepperdine (5-4) with 15 points while Jimmy Miggins added 12.
Pepperdine held an 18-13 lead with 12:53 left in the first half before Utah went on a 9-0 run to take a 22-18 lead as the Waves went scoreless for six minutes. The Utes continued their run, taking a 41-30 lead into half time.
Pepperdine trailed 44-30 with 19:40 remaining before going on a 13-2 run to get to within 46-43, but would get no closer. The Utes countered with a 23-14 run to take a 69-57 lead with 2:20 remaining to put the game away.
The Utes had a decisive 48-32 advantage on the boards and outshot the Waves 46.3 to 33.8 percent from the field. Utah also held Pepperdine to just 13.6 percent from three-point range, its best defensive effort from long range this season.
Inside the Numbers
* In five of the six wins, Utah has held its opponent to under 40 percent shooting from the field. The Utes have outshot their opponents 48.6 to 35.9 percent in its wins. No team has shot 50 percent from the field on Utah this season.
* The Utes have kept their opponents off the free throw line in their six wins, allowing 73 attempts while making 117 trips themselves. In the three losses, the opposite has been the case with the opponents outshooting Utah at the free throw line 122 to 42, and making 82.
* The Utes have outrebounded their opponents in all six wins by an average of 37.2 to 31.7. As a case in point, Utah had a 48-32 advantage on the glass in its win 77-61 over Pepperdine on Friday. In two of the three losses, Utah has been on the negative side of that stat. Its rebound deficit in losses is 34.0 to 30.3.
* Winthrop shot 27.3 percent (15-for-55) from the field, which was the sixth-worst mark by a Ute opponent all-time. It was the Utes' best defensive effort since Concordia shot 20.3 percent, the lowest mark by a Ute opponent all-time, on Dec. 26, 2000.
* Winthrop's 42 points were the lowest allowed by the Utes in 22 games since Saint Mary's (Calif.) scored 35 points on Jan. 7, 2002.
* Utah's point guards, freshman Tim Drisdom and sophomore Marc Jackson, have combined for 50 assists and 31 turnovers for a 1.61 assist/turnover ratio.
* Utah has had a positive assist/turnover ratio in six games this season, including five games in a row before the last two games. The Utes had a season-low nine turnovers with a season-high 20 assists on 27 field goals against Northern Iowa on Dec. 14.
Great Britton: Wooden Award Candidate Out Until At Least Mid-January
Senior forward Britton Johnsen (6-10, 210), named to the Wooden Award Preseason All-America Team, tore a ligament in his right thumb early in the game against Utah State on Dec. 17. He had surgery the next day and will be out at least 3-4 weeks. Johnsen is one of 50 players in the nation considered an early candidate for John R. Wooden Award, presented annually to college basketball's player of the year.
* Johnsen had scored in double figures in seven of the first eight games, leading Utah in scoring three times. Dating back to the 2000-01 season, Johnsen has scored in double figures in 45 of the last 63 contests he's played in.
* The Murray, Utah, native had his second double-double of the season with a game-high 10 points and 11 rebounds in 35 minutes in the win over UMass on Nov. 26. He has had seven double-doubles in the last 23 games dating back to last season.
* Johnsen led Utah in rebounding in five of the first eight games this season, averaging 6.8 boards per contest. He also led the Utes in rebounding 14 of the final 20 games last season, averaging 7.4 rebounds per game during that stretch.
Jacobson Stroking "J"s
Junior guard Nick Jacobson (6-4, 200) is Utah's third-best scorer this season (12.7 ppg) and paces the team in three-pointers made, making 23-of-52 (44.2 percent) from beyond the arc.
* Jacobson has scored in double-figures in 27 of the last 39 games dating back to last season.
* With 21 points against Utah State, Jacobson reached 20 points for the sixth time in his career and the second time in eight games this season. He shot 8-of-11 from the field and 5-of-8 from three-point range in 38 minutes. Jacobson also had 21 points against UMass in the Maui Invitational.
* In the final 2001-02 NCAA statistical rankings, Jacobson was 23rd in three-point percentage (44.4). The Fargo, N.D., native was named third team all-Mountain West and second team NABC/Pontiac All-District 13 in 2001-02. Jacobson led the team in scoring (13.0 ppg) and three-point percentage (44.4). He scored in double figures in 21 of the 30 games last season.
* Also last season, Jacobson set the Utah single-season mark with 71 three-pointers made last season, bettering the mark of 68 by Phil Dixon in 1991-92. He also ranked third in three-point attempts (160).
* Jacobson has already climbed into sixth place in career three-pointers made (129) and sixth in three-pointers attempted (304) at Utah. His career three-point percentage of 42.0 entering this season would have ranked fourth all-time at Utah.
Frost Formidable Inside
Junior center Tim Frost (6-10, 236) has established himself as a formidable interior presence early in his first season with the Utes.
* Frost is second on the team in both scoring (13.1 ppg), reaching double figures in six games this season, and rebounds per game (5.0 rpg). He also has four blocked shots.
* Frost had his first double-double as a Ute with 13 points and 10 rebounds against Pepperdine on Dec. 20. It was also the sixth double-double of his college career.
* Frost had a season-high 18 points, making 8-of-12 shots from the field, and seven rebounds in just 23 minutes against Arizona State on Dec. 7.
* The Klamath Falls, Ore., native spent the first two seasons of his college career at Portland. He was a first team all-West Coast Conference selection in his final season with the Pilots, averaging 14.9 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.9 blocked shots per game.
Rating the Rookies
With only four lettermen returning from last season and 10 scholarship players on the roster, Rick Majerus has played his freshmen extensively early in the season. Here's a breakdown of how the quartet of Richard Chaney (G/F, 6-4, 186), Tim Drisdom (G, 6-3, 203), Chris Jackson (C, 6-11, 242) and Bryant Markson (F, 6-6, 182) have been producing.
* Drisdom, who's started every game at point guard, leads the Utes in assists (3.8 apg) and three-point percentage (52.4), making 11-of-21.
* Chaney (6.2 ppg) and Drisdom (5.7 ppg) rank fourth and fifth, respectively, on the team in scoring. Markson (4.4 ppg) is eighth.
* Drisdom (3.6 rpg) and Chaney (3.3 rpg) are third and fourth, respectively, in rebounding.
* All four freshmen are shooting above 40 percent from the field, with Chaney at 51.2 percent, Drisdom at 44.4 percent, Jackson at 66.7 percent and Markson at 50.0 percent.
Take Note of These Utes
* Richard Chaney reached double-figures in points for the first time with 15 points against Winthrop. He also had personal-best marks with five rebounds and two assists. Chaney had his second-best scoring game with 14 points against Northern Iowa, hitting 3-of-7 three-pointers and 5-of-10 shots overall.
* Tim Drisdom had career highs of 11 points, making 3-of-8 three-pointers, and seven assists against Northern Iowa. He set a career-high with six rebounds against Winthrop.
* Chris Jackson set personal-best marks with six points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots against Winthrop.
* Cameron Koford had a career-high six blocked shots and season highs of 10 points (3-4 FG, 4-6 FT) and seven rebounds in 21 minutes against Pepperdine.
* Bryant Markson reached double figures for the the first time as a Ute against Arizona State on Dec. 7. He had 10 points, shooting 4-of-6 from the field, in 12 minutes. Markson had his first collegiate start with seven points in 16 minutes against Pepperdine.
