RED RIVER and TAOS, N.M. - The University of Utah ski team placed third at the New Mexico Invitational Feb. 8-9, trailing Denver and Colorado. In the final event of the season before the Regional Championships, the Utes were carried by the women's cross country team, which earned the top results in the 10K skate. Pierre Olsson added his second slalom victory of the season to give the Utes their fourth podium finish of the year.
Jorunn Oye led the Utah women's cross country team with a second place finish in the 10K skate. Denise Whitten followed in fifth and Anna Sprague placed seventh to wrap up scoring for the Utes. Utah's depth proved evident with 11th and 12th place finishes by Jaana Kettunen and Sara Svendsen, respectively.
Oye and Svendsen teamed up to place second in the women's classical sprint relay. Maria Lundamo and Sprague combined to finish seventh, while Kettunen and Whitten placed eighth.
In the men's 10K skate, Petter Svendsen was the highest Ute finisher in 12th, followed by Ryan Quinn in 14th and Zack Simons in 15th. Svendsen and Quinn sprinted to a third place finish in the men's classic relay, while Simons and Marco Stevanoni crossed the line in 12th.
Freshman Pierre Olsson continued his dominance in the men's slalom by skiing to his second victory of the season. Olsson added a second place finish in the giant slalom. In the first four invites of the season, Olsson has totalled eight podium finishes. Defending NCAA champion, Jernej Bukovec, placed seventh in the slalom and ninth in the GS. Freshman Josh Whitham added a fifth place finish in the GS.
Petra Svet, the NCAA women's slalom champion in 2001, gave the Utes a second place finish in the slalom and a fifth place contribution in the GS. Annik Boulva placed seventh in the slalom and 10th in the GS, while April Mancuso added an eighth place showing in the GS.
The Utes will have some time off before heading to Anchorage, Alaska for the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association's Regional Championships on Feb. 27-28. The Utes will wrap up the season at the NCAA Championships Mar. 6-9 in Anchorage.
