ANCHORAGE - A first-place finish by Sophomore April Mancuso in the giant slalom helped the University of Utah ski team hold onto a second place finish at the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association's Regional championships. Despite missing one of their top women's nordic competitors, Jorunn Oye, the Utes held off a second day charge from Denver - which had won every previous RMISA competition this season - to finish runner-up behind Colorado.
Mancuso stole the show with her second giant slalom title of the season, giving Utah a large boost in points. Defending NCAA slalom champion, Petra Svet skied to a sixth-place showing, while Annik Boulva wrapped up Utah's scoring with an 18th-place finish.
Pierre Olsson earned his fourth podium finish of the year in the giant slalom with his third second-place finish of the season. Josh Whitham finished in a tie for seventh, while defending men's NCAA slalom champion, Jernej Bukovec placed ninth.
"We performed very well," said alpine coach Ryan Forsyth. "April Mancuso did a great job. She needed to have a strong result and she delivered. Pierre Olsson has skied well all year and he stepped up again and had a good finish."
Oye, who has been one of the top skiers in the nation and has not finished outside of the top 10 all season, sat out the regionals due to illness. Jaana Kettunen and Sara Svendsen stepped up for the Ute in the women's 10km freestyle, delivering fifth and sixth place finishes, respectively. Anna Sprague added a 14th place finish.
In the men's 15km freestyle, the Utes had three top-10 finishers. Petter Svendsen led the way for Utah with a seventh place finish, followed by Ryan Quinn in eighth and Zack Simons in 19th.
"I was very pleased with the cross country team's performance," said head coach Kevin Sweeney. "Jaana Kettunen and Ryan Quinn skied very well to solidify their NCAA positions. Torin Koos had two very solid races. The conditions were tough, but I feel that we came together and showed that we are ready to rise to the top."
The Utes will be back in Anchorage Mar. 6-9 for the NCAA championships. "I'm excited about the NCAA's," boasts Sweeney. "I'm very optimistic about this team. We are showing signs that we are sharp and focused."
