SALT LAKE CITY -
Dominique D'Oliveira, a member of the South African National team since 1998, has signed a national letter of intent to compete for the University of Utah gymnastics team. D'Oliveira, who placed third in the all-around at the 2000 and 2001 South African Championships, was her country's top finisher at the World Championships in Ghent, Belgium, last October.
She has also competed for South Africa at the 1998 Commonwealth Games, the 2000 Como and Monte Forte Cups in Italy, the 2000 African Championships in Tunisia, and the 2001 SA International Cup.
"Dominique resembles the prototype Utah gymnast," says Utah head coach Greg Marsden. "She is a great student, a talented athlete and has the personality to be a strong team leader. She is a seasoned international competitor, yet is still enthusiastic about gymnastics and determined to continue to improve throughout her collegiate career. Dominique will be a great addition to our team and will make an immediate impact."
D'Oliveira joins an already impressive 2002-03 Ute freshman class that includes Crystal Gilmore, a member of the 2000 Canadian Olympic team and 2001 World Championships team, Kristen Riffanacht, an Elite level gymnast from Cheshire, Ct., and Natalie Nicoloff, a Level 10 gymnast from Hermitage, Pa.
