TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -
The 10-time national champion University of Utah gymnastics team begins its quest for another national title today in Tuscaloosa, Ala., at the NCAA Championships. Utah, the only team to qualify for all 21 NCAA Championships, is making a record 27th-straight appearance at the national championships (includes AIAW).
The Utes must finish in the top three teams in the loaded afternoon session today to advance to Friday's Super Six team finals. In Utah's session are five of the nation's top-eight ranked teams and four teams from last year's Super Six (Utah, Georgia, Michigan and Nebraska). The other two teams in the afternoon session are powerful LSU and Arizona.
Leading the way for Utah is three-time NCAA champion Theresa Kulikowski, who will compete in the all-around at an NCAA Championships for the first time since she won it as a freshman in 1999. Kulikowski missed the 2000 season with a knee injury and came back on two events last year-one, beam, which she won for a second time in her career-and the other bars (she placed third).
Joining Kulikowski in the all-around today are six-time NCAA All-America seniors Deidra Graham and Shannon Bowles, as well as freshman Annabeth Eberle.
The first round starts at 1 p.m. CDT, though the Utes won't begin competition until about 1:20 since they open on a bye. Utah's order of competition is bye, floor, vault, bye, bars, beam. The winner of the West Region two weeks ago, Utah also ended on beam in that meet.
Should the Utes make the three-team cut into the Super Six, they'll meet three of these teams from the evening session: Alabama, UCLA, Stanford, Oregon State, Minnesota and Florida. Only UCLA and Alabama made the Super Six a year ago.
Live stats will be posted from Alabama. Click the graphic on the gymnastics page to reach the live stats.
