Theresa Kulikowski, Shannon Bowles and Melissa Vituj will go after something that eluded their team last night-a national championship. The trio will represent the fourth-place Utah gymnastics team tonight in the NCAA individual event championships.
Kulikowski, who placed third in the all-around on Thursday, qualified for event finals on bars, beam and floor. Bowles, sixth in the all-around, will compete on beam and floor. Vituj will compete on the floor exercise.
Kulikowski, already a two-time NCAA balance beam champion, and Bowles are certainly among the favorites on the balance beam, an event on which Utah ranked first as a team all year long. Kulio and Bowles tied for first on the beam both nights of team competition, scoring a 9.95 each night.
Kulikowski, who will be the second to last competitor on the bars, also must be considered a contender on that event after placing first in the Super Six with a 9.95.
Vituj's powerful tumbling and energetic dance, along with her draw as the last competitor on the floor exercise, may hold Utah's brightest hope of a title on that event.
On Saturday morning, Kulikowski, Bowles, Vituj and Veronique Leclerc were honored at an All-America brunch hosted by the NCAA. Kulikowski received five honors, four first team and one second team (vault). She was one of two five-time NCAA All-Americans at this year's championship (Alabama's Andree Pickens was the other). Bowles received three first-team All-America awards (all-around, beam, floor). Vituj was recognized with one first-team award (floor exercise) and two second-team honors (vault, beam). Leclerc was a second-team uneven bars All-American for the second straight year.
