SALT LAKE CITY -
Utah All-America gymnast Shannon Bowles has been awarded an NCAA postgraduate scholarship of $5000, the NCAA office has announced. Bowles, who led the Utes to a fourth-place national finish at the 2002 NCAA Championships, was one of two Utes to win an NCAA postgraduate award. Indoor track athlete Teren Jameson was the other. They were among just 58 winter sports athletes from around the country to receive the prestigious scholarships.
Bowles, a 3.813 student with a dual major in exercise and sport science and psychology, overcame a broken neck suffered prior to the 2000 season to become a nine-time All-American. At the recent NCAA Championships in Tuscaloosa, Ala., she was named a first-team All-American in the all-around, on balance beam and on the floor exercise. Her best finish was on the floor ex, where she placed third. She was named the 2002 North Central Region Gymnast of the Year while leading Utah to the NCAA regional championship and an eventual berth in the Super Six.
After the season, Bowles received the 2002 Bud Jack Scholar-Athlete award, which recognized her for having the top GPA of any graduating senior woman athlete at the U. She was also named the first alternate to speak at Commencement ceremonies on May 10 after placing second in a campus-wide contest. At the gymnastics team banquet on April 26, she received the Dahl Award, which honors a U. gymnast for both scholastic and academic accomplishments.
To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of a 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) and have "performed with distinction" as a member of a varsity team. The student-athlete must also intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree.
Bowles was one of four Utes honored at the team banquet. The 2002 team honorees were:
Most Valuable Performer Theresa Kulikowski
Dahl Award (scholastic & athletic) Shannon Bowles
Diane Ellingson Award (most inspirational) Melissa Vituj
Coaches' Award (hard working, most improved) Veronique Leclerc
