SALT LAKE CITY -
The University of Utah gymnasts are making their 27th consecutive trip to the national championships after winning the NCAA West Region on April 6 in Corvallis, Ore. The 2002 NCAA Championships, hosted by the University of Alabama, will be held in Tuscaloosa, Ala., April 18-20.
Utah, which has won a record 10 national championships, is the only team to qualify for all 21 NCAA Championships to date. The Utes will be joined in Tuscaloosa by Alabama, UCLA, Georgia, Michigan, Louisiana State, Stanford, Florida, Nebraska, Arizona, Minnesota and Oregon State.
The NCAA office conducted a random draw to place three winners and three runners-up from the six regionals into each of the two sessions on April 18. Utah, ranked No. 4 in the final regular season poll, was paired with No. 3 Georgia, No. 5 Michigan, No. 6 LSU, No. 8 Nebraska and No. 12 Arizona. Utah will compete in the afternoon session, which starts at 1:00 p.m. CDT. The evening session has No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 Alabama, No. 10 Stanford, No. 11 Minnesota, No. 13 Oregon State and No. 15 Florida.
The Utes will start the competition on a bye, then they'll head to the floor exercise, vault, bars and finish on the beam. They also ended their competition on beam at regionals, where they scored a 197.100 to beat Oregon State (196.800) and Oklahoma (196.625), although their final bye came after they finished on beam.
The top three teams from each qualifying session will advance to the Super Six finals on Fri., Apr. 19. The individual event championships will be held on Sat., Apr. 20. Both of those meets will start at 7:00 p.m. CDT. Live stats will be posted on the Internet (www.rolltide.com).
