SALT LAKE CITY -
The NCAA office has selected the University of Utah to host the NCAA Gymnastics North Central Regional Championship on April 12, 2003. Since the host team for all six NCAA regionals is slotted a home court berth, the Utes will be one of the six teams competing in the Huntsman Center that night. The top two teams from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championships in Lincoln, Neb.
This marks the 10th time Utah has been selected to host a regional championship (the Utes have also hosted eight national championships). Utah has won 20 regional championships and finished as runner-up another seven times. That regional success has carried over to the national championships, where Utah has won a record 10 titles and finished as runner-up five times.
The regional championship highlights a phenomenal schedule for the Ute gymnasts in the coming season. The Utes will face six teams from last year's NCAA Championships' field, including UCLA, the 2000-01 NCAA Champion. The Bruins will put Utah's national record home court dual meet win streak of 170 (which stretches back to 1979) to a test immediately as they are Utah's season-opening opponent on Jan. 10 in the Huntsman Center.
The other teams from the 2002 NCAA Championships on Utah's 2003 schedule are Michigan, Florida, Louisiana State, Oregon State and Minnesota. Utah's 2003 schedule follows: Jan. 10 UCLA, Salt Lake City; Jan. 17 Brigham Young, Salt Lake City; Jan. 24 Arizona State, Salt Lake City; Jan. 31 Minnesota, Minneapolis; Feb. 7 Utah State, Logan; Feb. 14 Arizona, Tucson; Feb. 21 Oregon State, Corvallis; Feb. 28 Michigan, Salt Lake City; Mar. 7 Washington, Salt Lake City; Mar. 14 Louisiana State, Salt Lake City; Mar. 21 Florida, Gainesville; Apr. 12 NCAA Regional, Salt Lake City; Apr. 24-26 NCAA Championships, Lincoln, Neb.
