Annie Medcalf's Diary Is Back

SALT LAKE CITY - Annie Medcalf, a member of Utah's gymnastics team from 2001-02, had a promising career cut short when a tumor was discovered in her vertebra. She underwent surgery last spring that required the fusing of five vertebrae, along with the removal of the tumor. Medcalf, a former U.S. National Team member from Stow, Ohio, has remained with the Utah team as an undergraduate student-assistant coach while she completes her academic degree. She is also writing a weekly diary.
O.K. I have to apologize for not writing the past few weeks. The holiday season is always crazy, as I am sure you know. But, I promise I will keep you updated from now on.
Now, the UCLA meet. . .
First off, I would just like to say how awesome our fans are. You guys are the nicest, most gracious group out there. The Huntsman Center was not only loud for the Red Rocks, but for the Bruins as well. The team and I would like to thank all of you for being such great sports and I'm not just talking about last Friday. Your support over the years not only means a lot to us, but to the teams we compete against.
Even though there wasn't a perfect ending on Friday night, we were happy with our performance. With only eight healthy girls out on the floor and half of them being underclassmen, our first meet went exceptionally well.
The new freshmen displayed grace, courage, and confidence while competing on the Huntsman Center floor for the very first time. They showed the coaches that they are ready and willing to step up and take the challenge when called upon. We were a little worried about Nat at the beginning; she was nervous the entire week before the meet! However, as you can see, she got through it and did great. As for Kristen, she was confident and had a positive attitude as usual and it definitely showed in her gymnastics that night. And then there is Gritt, who came off of being injured for most of preseason, and had an amazing meet! She is so pretty to watch out there; hopefully we will get to see more of her in the months to come.
As for the "seasoned veterans", they looked great! AB did well for her first meet of the year. However, she didn't feel the same way and is back in the gym determined to kick some major BYU "B" this Friday. Kim has been in great spirits lately (hum. . .wonder why?) and you could tell when she was out on the floor how much fun she was having. Kylee's back and ready to strut her stuff once again. She had two excellent performances on beam and floor.(Hey, we may even get to see her on bars a few times this season!) "V" gave another solid performance on all four events. She is pluggin' along, and hopefully soon, she will add some more exciting things to her already impressive resume of skills. Mel, the ultimate ham, also had an outstanding meet. She has started the season off strong, but is still planning on adding a thing or two later in the year.
The entire team, as well as the coaches, were very pleased with the results of this past weekend. Everyone is excited to get back in the gym and continue working hard. The UTES still have a few more surprises up their sleeves. So keep watching, because this year is going to be very exciting!
