Utah Gymnastics Team Loses One and Gains One

A week before its first home meet, the University of Utah gymnastics team has lost one gymnast to injury and gained another. Freshman Dominique D'Oliveira, a member of the South African National team, broke her ankle when she was home for the holidays and will be out for six to eight weeks. The addition is Gabriella Onodi, a three-time Hungarian all-around champion, who arrived in Salt Lake City from Budapest on Christmas night.
D'Oliveira, who was expected to contribute significantly in her first year, had surgery on Dec. 31 that required two pins to be inserted into her ankle. She expects to be cleared to swing bars by as early as Monday and Head Coach Greg Marsden hopes to have her back on at least that event before the season is over. Onodi has not trained since the World Championships in late November. She is also awaiting approval from the NCAA clearinghouse, which should be forthcoming since she has met all of the academic requirements.
"Dominque's loss is significant because she's a powerful gymnast with good international experience," says Marsden. "We're cautiously optimistic about her return to bars. The other three events will be a little more uncertain although she certainly plans to come back on those if at all possible. Gabriella isn't ready to compete yet since she hasn't trained for a month, but I think she'll be a great addition to the team once she gets back into competitive shape."
