Last Week
Utah won the Mountain West Conference Championship at Rice-Eccles Stadium, defeating second-seeded BYU 2-0 in the final after getting past fifth-seed UNLV in the semifinals.
The match against UNLV was recorded a draw, but the Utes advanced to the championship match by winning the shootout 6-5. The shootout was the first ever in MWC Championship history.
The Utes and Rebels were tied at three goals apiece after the mandatory five kicks allowed to each team to start the shootout. On the ninth go-around for the two teams, including four sudden-death kicks after the first five, Utah junior defender Tracy Stratton's shot got past the outstretched hands of Jenna Huff, giving Utah the one-up on UNLV. With the match in the balance, senior defender/midfielder Tania Lee's shot curved to the left of the goal.
The Utes captured their first league tournament title with the win over the Cougars. After a scoreless first half, senior midfielder Amber Brower opened up the scoring for the Utes in the 60th-minute. After taking a pass from Lauren Field, Brower fired a shot into the left corner from 10 yards out.
Nearly 30 minutes later, Utah sealed its victory when freshman forward Amanda Feigt dribbled down a third of the field, made a couple of moves and sailed a shot from 20 yards away over Cougar goalkeeper Ashley Smith's head.
Utah freshman goalkeeper Ashley Mason tallied her second straight shutout over the Cougars and her seventh of the season, holding BYU scoreless for only the fourth time on the year.
Brower was named Tournament Most Valuable Player after netting the game-winning goal for the Utes. Also making the all-tournament team for Utah were Bobbie Benegas, Field and Stratton.

During his tenure, the Broncos made the NCAA College Cup three times and captured the 2001 national title.

The fact that we get to host, it's nice that our program has risen to the point in results and support that the NCAA has recognized that we're able to host. Hopefully we'll be able to focus in on Thursday's game with Idaho State first and go from there."
