Utah moves on to the final round of the Preseason NIT on Wednesday against either Connecticut or Georgia Tech. The consolation game will be at 4:30 p.m. (EST) followed by the championship game at 7:00 p.m. (EST). Both games will be on ESPN2.

Quickly On Utah

Utah (3-0) heads to New York City for the Preseason NIT final four on Wednesday and Friday. The Utes take on Texas Tech (3-0) in the semifinals at 7:05 p.m. (EST) on Wednesday. The game will be televised by ESPN2 and broadcast on KALL-700 AM and the Utah Sports Network.

The Runnin' Utes opened Preseason NIT play by defeating Georgia State, 46-38, in the first round and Minnesota, 66-54, in the second round. Both games were played in Salt Lake City. Utah opened a three-game swing through the Empire State with a 51-48 win at Stony Brook on Sunday afternoon.

The Utes return three starters and three other lettermen from last season. Utah went 25-8 overall, advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and claimed a share of the Mountain West Conference regular-season championship with an 11-3 mark.

Freshman forward Andrew Bogut (6-10, 233) leads the Utes in both scoring (12.7 ppg) and rebounding (13.0 rpg). The native of Melbourne, Australia, had double-doubles in the first two games and is shooting 73.9 percent from the field. Sophomore forward Richard Chaney (6-4, 195) is tied for the lead in scoring (12.7 ppg), shooting 3-of-6 from three-point range. Senior guard Nick Jacobson (6-4, 206) is third in scoring (9.3 ppg). Freshman forward Justin Hawkins (6-4, 207) is second in rebounding (4.3 rpg). Sophomore guard Tim Drisdom (6-2, 212) leads the Utes in assists (4.0 apg).

Scouting Texas Tech

The Red Raiders are 3-0 after defeating East Tennessee State 64-53 on Sunday in Lubbock, Texas. In the first two rounds of the Preseason NIT, Texas Tech defeated Davidson 89-58 on Tuesday and Massachusetts 90-50 on Friday, playing both games at home.

Senior guard/forward Andre Emmett (6-5, 225) has been a first team all-Big 12 selection the last two years. He leads the team in scoring (20.0 ppg) and rebounding (6.7 rpg). Guard Jarrius Jackson (6-1, 185) is second in scoring (13.7 ppg), shooting 5-of-11 from three-point range and 83.3 percent from the free throw line. Senior forward Robert Tomaszek (6-9, 250) is tied for the lead in rebounds (6.7 ppg) and is third in scoring (9.0 ppg).

Head Coach Bob Knight Bob Knight is 48-22 in his third year at Texas Tech and 812-311 in 38 seasons at a head coach. He won his 800th career game on Feb. 5, 2003 over Nebraska and ranks fourth in NCAA Division I all-time wins. Coaching teams at Army, Indiana and Texas Tech, he has led teams to 25 NCAA Tournaments, three national titles and eight conference championships.

Utah vs. Texas Tech Series Notes

* The Utes and Red Raiders meet for the sixth time on Wednesday with Utah leading the series 3-2. * Texas Tech has won the last two games, taking the most-recent confrontation 81-73 on Nov. 29, 1984 in Lubbock, Texas.

* Utah has taken the only meeting on a neutral court, winning 68-62 on Dec. 16, 1977 in Knoxville, Tenn.

* Rick Majerus has never faced Texas Tech.

* Rick Majerus is 1-2 in head-to-head meetings with Bob Knight. During Majerus' tenure at Utah, he faced Knight's Indiana teams twice in the Maui Invitational, going 1-1. The Utes defeated the Hoosiers 77-72 on Nov. 21, 1994 and lost 52-49 on Nov. 24, 1998.

NIT History

The Preseason NIT began in 1985 and is one of the premiere preseason tournaments in college basketball. The tournament field is 16 teams with NCAA legislation allowing for only one team from a conference to participate in a given year. A team may participate once every four years. The first Preseason NIT was won by Duke. Last year's title was taken by North Carolina.

This year's tournament field includes three teams from last year's NCAA Tournament field: Utah, Connecticut and Vermont (which played in Salt Lake City). Five other teams were in the postseason NIT: Texas Tech (final four), Georgia Tech (final eight), Louisiana-Lafayette, Minnesota and Nevada. In addition to Rick Majerus (408 wins), this year's field also includes two other coaches with over 400 wins in Bob Knight of Texas Tech (812 wins) and Jim Calhoun of Connecticut (650 wins).

Utes In Another Early Season Tournament Under Majerus

Utah is competing in the Preseason NIT for the second time in five years. This marks the fifth time in the last six years and the sixth time overall that Utah has competed in a certified early season tournament during the Rick Majerus era. The Utes have posted a 9-7 record those tournaments. Utah is 3-1 in the Preseason NIT, including a 1-1 record when it was last a part of the tournament field in 1999. Four years ago, Utah defeated Arkansas State 76-43 at home before losing at Kentucky 56-48 in the second round.

Last Time At The Garden

The last time the Utes played in Madison Square Garden, they were playing in the 1992 postseason NIT. Utah lost to Notre Dame 58-55 in the semifinals and defeated Florida 81-78 in the consolation game.

Utah had also played in Madison Square Garden seven other times in the NIT (1944, '47, '49, '57, '58, '70 and '74). Utah won the 1947 NIT championship, defeating Kentucky 49-45 on March 24. The Utes also made it to the NIT title game in 1974 with wins over Rutgers, Memphis State and Boston College before falling to Purdue 87-81.

Bogut Named MWC Player of the Week

Freshman forward Andrew Bogut (6-10, 233) was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week on Monday. Bogut led the Utes in both scoring and rebounding with double-doubles in their first two games. Through three games, he is averaging 12.7 points and 13.0 rebounds per game while shooting 73.9 percent from the field in 31.3 minutes per contest.

* Bogut and two-time All-American Keith Van Horn in 1993-94 are the only Ute freshmen to have double-doubles in their first two games. Bogut had 15 points, hitting 7-of-10 field goals and 1-of-4 free throws, and 16 rebounds against Georgia State. In the Minnesota game, he had 19 points, going 8-of-9 from the field, 1-of-1 from beyond the arc and 2-of-4 at the free throw line. Bogut also had 18 rebounds, which tied the 12th-best single-game mark in school history.

* The Melbourne native led Australia to the 2003 FIBA Junior World Championships in Greece in July, earning tournament MVP honors.

Game #3 Rewind

Richard Chaney scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half-including a go-ahead three-point basket-as undefeated Utah rallied for a 51-48 victory Sunday over Stony Brook in Long Island. Nick Jacobson added 11 points for the Utes (3-0), hitting 3-of-6 treys.

D.J. Munir had 12 points to lead the Seawolves (1-1). His pair of free throws gave them a 44-39 advantage with 5:28 to play. Utah then nailed four three-pointers, two by Chaney, in a 12-2 rally. His first three-pointer narrowed the margin to 46-45 with 2:23 remaining.

Chaney then hit the go-ahead three-ball with 1:16 to play, giving Utah the lead for good. Jacobson followed with the fourth straight three-pointer to make it 51-46 with 7.5 seconds remaining.

Utah outshot Stony Brook 48.8 to 39.0 percent and made 7-of-14 threes to the Seawolves' 3-of-7 effort from behind the arc. The Utes also had a 31 to 21 edge on the boards, but also committed 16 turnovers-10 coming in the first half.

Ute Items

* With its win Sunday at Stony Brook, Utah is 3-0 to start the season for the first time since 1997-98. That year the Utes won 18 in a row, which is the best start in school history.

* The Utes have been finishing off close games this season. In the opener against Georgia State, Utah was down 31-26 with 9:36 remaining before coming back to win 46-38. Against Minnesota, the Utes led by just 49-45 with 7:33 to play before pulling away for a 66-54 win. Stony Brook had a 44-39 lead on the Utes with 5:28 left before Utah went on a 12-4 run to close it out, winning 51-48.

* Turnovers have been a problem for the Ute so far this year. Utah's 21 turnovers against Georgia State matched its season-high from last year, set in the second game against Gonzaga on Nov. 25 in the first round of the Maui Invitational. The Utes also had 20 turnovers against Minnesota and 16 against Stony Brook.

* The Utes had made a three-pointer in 152 consecutive games before going 0-for-8 against Georgia State on Nov. 17. The last time Utah didn't make a three was during an 0-for-12 outing at Long Beach State on Dec. 5, 1998.

In The Polls

* Utah received 29 votes to rank No. 29 in the ESPN/USA Today preseason poll.

* The Utes received 30 votes to rank 31st in Associated Press preseason poll.

Getting Defensive

One of the trademarks of a Utah team during the Rick Majerus era is a stifling half-court defense. Since 1989-90, Utah has ranked in the top 30 in the nation 11 times in scoring defense, nine times in rebound margin, eight times in field goal percentage defense and eight times in scoring margin.

* Utah has held all three opponents under 40 percent shooting from the field this season, with Georgia State shooting 30.6 percent, Minnesota 33.3 percent and Stony Brook 39.0 percent. All three teams were also held under 55 points.

* Utah has not allowed an opponent to score 80 points in 98 consecutive games that have ended in regulation. The last team to score 80 points on the Utes in a 40-minute game was Wyoming (88) on Feb. 28, 2000 in Laramie, Wyo.

* Last season, Utah ranked 14th in the NCAA in scoring defense, giving up 60.3 points per game.

* The Utes held 18 teams under 60 points last season and five teams under 50 points.

* Fourteen opponents shot under 40 percent from the field in 2002-03. The only team to defeat Utah when shooting under 40 percent was New Mexico on March 1 when the Lobos shot 38.1 percent; however, the Lobos made 40-of-53 free throws. Only three teams shot 50 percent or better against the Utes. In this season's opener, Georgia State shot just 30.6 percent from the field.
