Scouting Colorado
The Buffaloes are 6-1 overall following a 71-44 win over Tennessee State on Friday night in Boulder, Colo. Prior to taking off nine days for semester exams, CU defeated Oregon State (81-66) on Dec. 1 and California (78-60) on Dec. 6 at home, and Colorado State (84-78) on Dec. 10 on the road. Colorado's only loss this season was at Pepperdine (94-77) on Nov. 24.
The Buffaloes are 3-0 at home this season and have won 15 in a row at the Coors Events Center, which is their longest winning steak in the arena. They went 14-1 at home last season, including an 8-0 mark against Big 12 opposition.
Junior center David Harrison (7-0, 270) leads Colorado in both scoring (18.7 ppg) and rebounding (9.7 rpg). He is also shooting 67.6 percent from the field and has 19 blocked shots. Senior guard/forward Michel Morrandais (6-5, 205) is second on the team in both scoring (16.7 ppg) and rebounding (5.0 rpg), and is averaging a team-high 3.0 assists per game. Head Coach Ricardo Patton
Ricardo Patton is in his ninth season as the head coach at Colorado with a 131-104 record. Coming to CU as an assistant coach in 1993, Patton moved up the Colorado coaching ranks, first to interim head coach and then to head coach. Patton was named interim head coach in January of 1996, when he replaced Joe Harrington. He was promoted to head coach less than two month's later on March 5 just before the Big Eight conference tournament.
In Patton's first full season as head coach (1996-97), he led to Buffaloes to their first NCAA Tournament berth since 1969. The team finished second in the conference and racked up the most victories in program history with 22. On the national level, the Buffs broke into the rankings for the first time in a quarter of a century. Patton was named the West Region Coach of the Year by the Basketball Times.
Last season, Colorado returned to the NCAA Tournament and reached the 20-win plateau. It marked only the third time in the 101-year history of CU basketball that the Buffaloes achieved a 20-win season-two of them under Patton. Patton's Buffs also posted back-to-back 18-win seasons in 1998-99 and 1999-2000.

* With his first three-pointer against Cal State Northridge on Friday, Jacobson took over sole possession of the top mark for career threes made at Utah. He tied Keith Van Horn's mark of 206 three-point field goals against LSU-Jacobson took 103 games while Van Horn needed 122. Jacobson now has 208 career three-pointers. He is also second in three-pointers attempted (492) at Utah, closing in on Van Horn's top mark of 514. His career three point percentage of 42.2 entering this season ranked fourth all-time.
* Jacobson has scored in double-figures in 54 of the last 73 games dating back to the 2001-02 season, including 27 of the 33 games in 2002-03 and six of 10 games this year. He had 21 points against San Diego, shooting 6-of-11 from three-point range to tie the second-best mark for threes made and equal the third-best mark for attempts in school history.

Richard Chaney added 18 points for the Utes (7-3), who pulled away in the second half by going 14-for-22 (63.6 percent) from the floor and improved to 6-0 at home.

Bogut, who finished with his fifth double-double this season, had three points and three rebounds during the run as the Utes pulled away. Bogut was 5-for-6 from the field and 7-for-9 from the free-throw line.
After White's layup with 4:29 remaining cut Utah's lead to 59-55, the Matadors' only points the rest of the way were two free throws by Joseph Frazier with 1:43 to play and Utah already comfortably ahead.
Utah had a 32-25 advantage on the boards, and shot 51.0 percent from the field a season-best 86.4 percent from the free throw line.
Getting Defensive
One of the trademarks of a Utah team during the Rick Majerus era is a stifling half-court defense. Since 1989-90, Utah has ranked in the top 30 in the nation 11 times in scoring defense, nine times in rebound margin, eight times in field goal percentage defense and eight times in scoring margin.
* In the NCAA statistical rankings released on Dec. 16, Utah led the nation in both scoring defense (46.9 ppg) and field goal percentage defense (33.9), and ranked 22nd in rebound margin (+4.6 rpg). Currently, opponents are averaging 52.6 points per game and shooting 39.0 percent against the Utes. Utah also has a +4.1 rebound margin.
* Utah has held six of its 10 opponents to less than 40 percent from the field and three teams to under 40 points. Savannah State shot 18.2 percent against the Utes on Dec. 13, which is the lowest mark for a Utah opponent all-time. San Diego shot just 30.0 percent against the Utes on Dec. 6. Only one team (UConn at 62.3 percent) has shot better than 50 percent from the field against the Utes this season.
* Utah has not allowed an opponent to score 80 points in 105 consecutive games that have ended in regulation. The last team to score 80 points on the Utes in a 40-minute game was Wyoming (88) on Feb. 28, 2000 in Laramie, Wyo.
Ute Items
* Turnovers have been a problem for the Utes, who are averaging 16.1 per game. Utah has had a positive assist/turnover ratio in just two of the 10 games this season. Utah averaged 18.0 turnovers during the first five games, including a season-high 21 against Georgia State in the opener. Since that opening stretch, Utah has improved slightly in that area with 14 turnovers in three of the last five games (Utah State, San Diego and LSU). The Utes also had a season-low 12 turnovers with a season-high 24 assists against Savannah State on Dec. 13.
* Utah has made significant progress at the free throw line. After shooting just 26.8 percent (11-of-41) from the stripe against Stony Brook, Texas Tech and UConn (getting losses in the later two games), Utah has shot 73.3 percent (77-of-105) in the last five games. The Utes shot a season-best 86.4 percent (19-of-22) from the line against Cal State Northridge.
* The Utes have finished off four close games for wins this season. In the opener against Georgia State, Utah was down 31-26 with 9:36 remaining before coming back to win 46-38. Against Minnesota, the Utes led by just 49-45 with 7:33 to play before pulling away for a 66-54 win. Stony Brook had a 44-39 lead on the Utes with 5:28 left before Utah went on a 12-4 run to close it out, winning 51-48. Most recently, Utah led Cal State Northridge 55-53 with 6:46 remaining before outscoring the Matadors 18-4 to close out the game.
