SALT LAKE CITY -
Well this has been yet another productive week of hard work and confidence
building in the gym. This week was particularly exciting because we had our
very first home meet last Friday night. I know that I was very excited to compete
in front of 10,000-plus fans.
Workouts are going well this week with lots of us working on upgrades for our routines. There has been lots of energy in the gym and everybody, including those with injuries, has had a great attitude and worked out with the utmost enthusiasm. This week was tough because it was our first week back in classes and schedules changed quite a bit. Everybody did a great job adjusting and getting right back into the swing of things.
We competed against the Nebraska Cornhuskers in our first home meet and it was amazing! We had a crowd of almost 10,000 for the home opener. AB, Mel, and Riffy all had family in for the weekend to watch the meet. Our fans were loud and proud showing their school spirit, we even had stuffed animals dressed up in leotards floating about in the crowd. This was the debut of the Gymnastics Muss, or the Gymnastics Fan club, which has about 200 student members.
We were not perfect, having some glitches on a few routines, but nonetheless it was a great experience and an improvement from the week before. Rachel and Gritty both upgraded their routines in the meet this week with full twisting double backs on bars and floor. There were lots of smiles out on the floor with most of the team debuting their new floor routines at home. The crowd really got into them and it helped us to really show it off and have a blast out there. Our depth on every event is tremendous and it is improving day by day. We are pushing one another to get better.
I now finally understand that tingly feeling when the Top Gun theme song plays before we run out of the tunnel. It definitely pumps us all up. I can't wait until the next time! So until then I hope you all have a great week and don't forget to read next week's journal.
Go UTES!
