SALT LAKE CITY - It's back in the win column for the University of Utah volleyball team after it swept rival Brigham Young University this afternoon, 3-0.
The win came on scores of 30-24, 30-20 and 31-29.
The Utes, who were swept 3-0 by Notre Dame in their last outing, returned the favor to BYU this afternoon in improving to a perfect 8-0 in Mountain West Conference action. Their overall mark ups to 16-3. BYU falls to 11-9 for the season and is at .500 in conference play at 4-4.
"This was one of the better matches this season," remarked head coach Beth Launiere. "The team completely executed in all facets of the game. I thought we controlled the passing and serving, and the players executed our blocking plan perfectly.
"BYU runs a fast offense and that was something that we worked on all week."
Utah got off to slow start in game one, hitting .205 in the opening frame. However, a late 8-1 rally gave Utah a 28-23 lead that seemed to set the pace for the rest of the match. The Utes never hit worse that .333 in the final two stanzas and dictated game two with a commanding 10-point win.
Leading the Ute offense was Liana Bortoto. The outside hitter tallied 20 points on a career-high 19 kills and one service ace. She turned in a double-double with 11 defensive digs as well. Lyndsey Henderson chimed in with 15 kills of her own while Shelly Sommerfeldt tagged the BYU defense for another 13. Sommerfeldt led all attackers with a .476 hitting percentage (13-3-21).
The match featured two of the best blockers in the nation in Henderson and BYU's Lindsy Hartsock. Henderson tied with Emillie Toone with a team-best four blocks while Hartsock recorded a match-best seven. Team block were even, 9-9.
Connie Dangerfeld led from the back with a match-high 12 digs while Tracy Neumeier led the Utes by handing out 27 assists. Kelsie Kartchner dished out 23 of her own.
Lindsey Evans led the Cougars with nine digs while Lauren Richards' 32 assists led all players.
The Utes return to action next weekend with another two-match homestand. Utah hosts New Mexico on Friday, Oct. 29, and Air Force on Saturday, Oct. 30. Both matches at Crimson Court start at 7 p.m.
