Ute Women's Soccer Falls 3-0 At San Diego

SAN DIEGO - Utah wrapped-up its two-game swing through southern California with a 3-0 loss to the University of San Diego on Sunday afternoon.

The Utes, who opened the trip with a 2-1 win over No. 7 UCLA on Friday night, fell to 7-3-1 on the season. San Diego picked up its second consecutive home win over a quality opponent after taking down No. 3 Washington 2-1 on Friday night. The Toreros evened their mark at 6-6-1 on the season.

The Toreros jumped on the Utes at the start of the game and set up six corner kicks in the first 20 minutes. In addition to giving up three goals, Ute goalkeeper Ashley Mason also made five saves in the game. San Diego outshot Utah 14-5 and had a 9-2 advantage in corners for the game.

USD's first goal came 7:05 in when Lee Klopschinski scored from close range off a tipped pass. Brooke Roby and Michelle Rowe, who played a part on all goals, were credited with assists.

The Toreros got to Mason for the second time with 31:12 still remaining in the opening half. Rowe took a pass from Marie-Claude Henry on a breakaway opportunity and beat the charging Mason.

The Utes then settled down and set up their first scoring opportunity in the 30th minute. Junior forward Kim Lloyd had a direct free kick from the left side of the penalty box, but Torero goalkeeper Karen Cook made an excellent save. Cook had two saves in the game.

Utah also had some scoring opportunities late in the game when Lauren Field and Carisse Winegar slipped behind the USD defense, but were able to connect.

After Utah clamped down defensively for the middle 60 minutes of the game, San Diego scored its third goal with a little over 15 minutes to play when a cross by Rowe deflected off Mason. Amy Espsten pounced on it for the score.

"San Diego was the better team and deserved to win," said Ute head coach Rich Manning. "They came out from the opening kickoff and took it to us. It was disappointing that we didn't give the effort we needed in the first half. But, it was good to see that we regrouped and put a consistent run together to give ourselves a chance to still win the game. Now we get ready for conference play."

Utah returns home to open is Mountain West Conference schedule against UNLV on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. at Ute Field.
