SALT LAKE CITY - The offense was hitting on all cylinders as the University of Utah volleyball team picked up its 10th conference win by sweeping the Air Force Academy Falcons tonight, 3-0.
Game scores were 30-14, 30-17 and 30-21. With the win, Utah sees its record improve to 18-3 overall and to a perfect 10-0 in Mountain West action. Air Force falls to 4-17 for the year and to 0-11 in MWC tilts.
"We talked about working hard during the match," head coach Beth Launiere said. "We were outworked in game one last night and we wanted to go out there and outwork our opponent - play our game on our side of the net. I think we did that tonight and I am happy about that."
The Utes came out on fire in game one, hitting an eye-opening .583 in the first frame. They chalked up 16 kills and committed a miniscule two errors on 24 attacks. While Utah couldn't maintain that pace throughout the entire match, it did manage to hit an impressive .382 (47 kills, 13 errors, 89 attacks) for the entire three games while holding the Falcons to a mere .022 (22 -20-92). Air Force never tallied more than eight kills in a game and couldn't hit better than the .037 (6-5-27) it totaled in the third game.
Offensively, Shelly Sommerfeldt led the way with eight kills while Kelsie Kartchner tallied seven and Natalie Miller six. Miller was the top hitter among the three, hitting an efficient .600 (6-0-10).
Katie Theurer and Connie Dangerfield each tallied a match-best three aces and Dangerfield also led all players with 16 digs.
Tracy Neumeier handed out a match-high 22 assists but also had help from Kartchner with 11 assists.
Defenseively, Utah also held the edge at the net, recording 11 team blocks to AFA's three. Lyndsey Henderson's eight blocks led everyone.
Air Force was led by Kristin Hamlett and her seven kills. Kimberly Kallabis dished out a team-best 20 assists while the defense was led by Lindsay Bengard (three blocks) and Rebecca Gallegos (five digs).
The Utes hit the road for a two-match road swing to San Diego State and UNLV next weekend. The Utes play at SDSU on Friday, Nov. 5, and at UNLV on Saturday, Nov. 6.
