SALT LAKE CITY - Chalk it up! The University of Utah women's volleyball team saw its winning streak reach double digits with its 3-0 win over San Diego State tonight.
The Utes have won 10 straight matches since dropping a heartbreaking five-game loss to UC Irvine back on Sept. 6.
The three-game sweep over SDSU came on game scores of 33-31, 30-24 and 30-21. The Utes up their tally to an impressive 13-2 for the season while their record remains unblemished in Mountain West Conference play at 5-0. The Aztecs fall to 1-17 for the year, 1-4 in MWC tilts.
"We've been dropping some games in some of our most recent wins," noted head coach Beth Launiere. "It's not usually a goal of ours to win one in three but I wanted our team to go out and get after it."
Utah hit a nice .288 (53 kills, 17 errors, 125 attempts) and were led by Lyndsey Henderson. The 6-4 middle blocker posted a match-high 14 kills, tallied 17.5 points and hit a swift .407 (14-3-27) for the match. Shelly Sommerfeldt was the only other Ute to tally double-digit kills with 11. Tracy Neumeier and Kelsie Kartchner set the attack with 23 and 22 assists, respectively.
Utah's defense continued to shine this evening as it out blocked the visitors, 15.5-5.0. Amie Toone stepped up to pace the team defensively, leading all players with eight blocks. Connie Dangerfield's 11 digs led all Utes.
The Aztecs' Kara Moriarty led the way with 14 kills while Kristen Castillo had a match-high 40 assists and Amie Cordeiro led everyone with 19 digs. Moriarty and Lindsey Mahan led SDSU with two blocks apiece.
The two conference rivals needed extra points to settle game one. In an exciting back-and-fourth game both teams hit better than .300 with the Aztecs edging the Utes in that department, .310-.308. However, Henderson's nine kills and .615 hitting percentage (9-1-13) led the Utes to an exciting game-one win.
Utah cruised to game two and game three wins. It held its rivals to a .054 hitting percentage and forced 23 errors in the final two stanzas while the Utes hit better than .260 themselves.
Utah returns to action next weekend when it hits the road to battle No. 7 Colorado State (Friday, Oct. 15) and Wyoming (Saturday, Oct. 16). Both matches start at 7 p.m.
