The Runnin' Utes play their third of five consecutive home games, hosting LSU on Monday, Jan. 3 at 8:07 p.m. (MST). The game will be broadcast on KJZZ-TV 14. Utah then closes out nonconference play against Whitworth on Wednesday, Jan. 5 at 7:05 p.m. (MST).

Quickly On Utah
Utah (9-3) continues a five-game homestand against Colorado (7-2) of the Big 12 Conference on Thursday at 8:07 p.m. (MST) at the Jon M. Huntsman Center (15,000) in Salt Lake City. The game will be televised by FSN Rocky Mountain, but not shown in Salt Lake City, and broadcast on Hot Ticket 700 (KALL-AM) and the Utah Sports Network. The Utes are 6-0 at home this season.

Utah won its fourth consecutive game with a 51-40 triumph over in-state rival Weber State on Tuesday night. Utah started its winning streak with an 81-66 win over Northern Colorado on Dec. 17, then recorded a 66-37 victory over Coppin State on Dec. 20; both games took place in Salt Lake City. In their last game before Christmas, the Utes picked-up their first win on an opponent's court this season with a 92-76 victory over Cal Poly on Dec. 22.

Sophomore center/forward Andrew Bogut (7-0, 240) leads the Utes in scoring (19.3 ppg), rebounding (11.1 rpg), blocked shots (25) and field goal percentage (62.2). Bogut has nine double-doubles this season to lead the nation. Senior guard Marc Jackson (6-1, 175) is third in scoring (11.3 ppg), hitting 51.1 percent of his three-point attempts (23-of-45) and 89.2 percent of his free throws. Sophomore forward Justin Hawkins (6-5, 220) is fourth in scoring (9.6 ppg ppg) and is second in rebounding (4.1 rpg). Junior guard Tim Drisdom (6-3, 210) leads the Utes in assists (3.6 apg) and has a 2.2 assists to turnover ratio.

Chaney Out Four To Six Weeks With Broken Hand
Richard Chaney, a junior forward/guard, broke two bones in his left hand on Monday in practice. Chaney had surgery on Wednesday and is expected to be out four to six weeks. Chaney has started 10 games and played in 11 this season, averaging 11.5 points per game to rank third on the team. He is also averaging 2.7 rebounds in 27.2 minutes per game, and has 17 assists and 10 steals this season.

Other Training Room Notes
? Senior guard Marc Jackson hyper-extended his right knee late in the Weber State game on Tuesday. Jackson was able to practice on Wednesday and is expected to play in the game with Colorado.

? Sophomore forward Justin Hawkins experienced back spasms during the second half of Tuesday night's game against Weber State. He is questionable for the Colorado game.

Bogut Named MWC Player Of The Week
Andrew Bogut has been named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week, marking his third career award.

A 7-0 sophomore center from Melbourne, Australia, Bogut paced the Utes to a 2-0 record last week with wins over Coppin State (66-37) and Cal Poly (92-76). He scored a career-high 28 points, hitting 12-of-19 field goals, and added 14 rebounds, four steals and two blocks in the win over Coppin State last Monday. Bogut tallied 23 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and two blocks in the win over Cal Poly last Wednesday.

For the week, Bogut averaged 25.5 points, 13 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.0 blocks and 2.0 steals, while shooting 60 percent (21-of-35) from the field.

Scouting The Buffaloes
Colorado is 7-2 overall and 1-2 on the road this season. The Buffs defeated Gardner-Webb 97-88 on Tuesday night at home to win their fifth consecutive game. After a loss at Oregon State (98-87) on Dec. 4, Colorado started its current winning streak with a 63-60 victory at California on Dec. 7 and an 89-83 win over Colorado State at home on Dec. 18. Colorado's only other loss this season was at Michigan (69-60) in the second round of the Preseason NIT on Nov. 17.

Freshman guard Richard Roby (6-6, 190) leads CU in scoring (15.8 ppg), is tied for second in rebounding (5.8 rpg) and has a team-high 18 steals. Sophomore guard Marcus Hall (6-1, 175) is second on the team in scoring (15.0 ppg) and leads the way in assists (3.7 apg). Hall is also shooting 47.2 percent from three-point range (17-for-36). Junior forward Chris Copeland (6-8, 225) is third in scoring (11.9 ppg), tied for second in rebounding (5.8 rpg) and has a team-high 13 blocked shots. Copeland has team-high percentages from both three-point range (55.6, going 15-for-27) and the free throw line (94.1). Junior-transfer Julius Ashby, who played in the first seven games and started six, is out up to eight weeks with a tendon tear in his left foot. The 6-9 forward is averaging 9.9 points and a team-best 7.3 rebounds per game.

Head Coach Ricardo Patton
Ricardo Patton is in his 10th season as the head coach at Colorado with a 150-116 record. Coming to CU as an assistant coach in 1993, Patton moved up the Colorado coaching ranks, first to interim head coach and then to head coach. Patton was named interim head coach in January of 1996, when he replaced Joe Harrington. He was promoted to head coach less than two months later on March 5 just before the Big Eight conference tournament.

In Patton's first full season as head coach (1996-97), he led the Buffaloes to their first NCAA Tournament berth since 1969. The team finished second in the conference and racked up the most victories in program history with 22. Patton was named the West Region Coach of the Year by the Basketball Times.

In 2002-03, Colorado returned to the NCAA Tournament and reached the 20-wins plateau. It marked only the third time in the 101-year history of CU basketball that the Buffaloes achieved a 20-win season--two of them under Patton. Last year the Buffaloes went 18-11, placed fourth in the Big 12 Conference and advanced to the first round of the NIT.

Working on Patton's staff is former Ute assistant coach and video coordinator Jason Shelton, who was on Rick Majerus' staff 1999-2000.

Utah vs. Colorado Series Notes
? Utah and Colorado meet for the 33rd time on Thursday. Colorado leads the all-time series 18-14.

? The Utes and Buffaloes played every year from 1983-88, but did not meet again until last season. Utah won 77-57 on Dec. 23 in Boulder, Colo. The Buffaloes won the previous game 68-65 on Dec. 6, 1988 in Boulder, Colo.

? Utah has won five of the last nine games in the series, but neither team has won more than two games in a row during that stretch.

? The U. has a 9-6 edge in games played in Salt Lake City. The Utes won the last game played against CU in Salt Lake City, 93-64 on Nov. 30, 1987.

? Ray Giacoletti has never faced Colorado.

? Ricardo Patton is 0-1 against Utah.

? Utah is 34-34 all-time against Big 12 Conference teams, including a 20-11 record in home games. Colorado is the Big 12 team the Utes have faced the most.

Last Meeting
Nick Jacobson scored 21 points and Andrew Bogut had 13 points and 13 rebounds, leading Utah to a 77-57 road win over Colorado last season on Dec. 23.

Tim Frost and Richard Chaney also had 13 points apiece for the Utes, who outscored Colorado 47-25 in the second half. Utah shot 60.0 percent in the second half compared to Colorado's 18.2 percent (4-of-22). The Utes also outrebounded the Buffaloes 43-23 for the game.

Colorado, which had its 15-game home winning streak snapped, was led by David Harrison with 18 points and Michel Morandais with 15.

Utah's 20-point win was its largest margin of victory on the road since winning by 30 points (81-51) at New Mexico on Jan. 21, 2002. It was also the largest margin of victory in a nonconference road game since defeating Loyola Marymount by 39 points (89-50) on Nov. 25, 1997.

Colorado built a 10-point lead in the first half before Utah trimmed it to two. The Buffaloes used a 17-4 run to open up a 23-13 lead with 7:21 left in the half. Morandais had nine points during the flurry, which he started with a three-pointer and ended with a pair of jumpers. Frost then hit three three-pointers, and Frost's jumper from the top of the key with 12 seconds left produced the 32-30 halftime score. Frost and Colorado's Lamar Harris each had 11 points in the half.

Trailing 32-30 at halftime, Utah used a 10-0 run early in the second half to forge a 44-34 lead. Chaney and Bryant Markson each had three-point plays, Bogut made a tip-in and Jacobson a 16-foot jumper to give Utah a lead it never relinquished.

Colorado cut the deficit to seven points on four occasions, the last time at 59-52 on Glean Eddy's three-pointer with 7:50 left. But Utah, which has won five of its last six games, outscored Colorado 18-5 the rest of the way.

Jacobson had 12 of his points in the second half, including back-to-back three-pointers midway through the half.

Boasting Of Bogut
Sophomore forward Andrew Bogut (7-0, 240) has been named to the 2004 John R. Wooden Preseason All-America Team and is a preseason candidate for the Naismith Award. Last season, Bogut was honored as the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year, second team all-MWC, and second team All-District 13 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). He also made the CollegeInsider.com all-freshman team.

? Bogut leads the Utes in scoring (19.3 ppg), rebounds (11.1 rpg), blocked shots (25), steals (18) and field goal percentage (62.2). He is also second in assists (2.6 apg), and is shooting 73.8 percent from the free throw line. He has led the Utes in scoring eight times and rebounding 11 times this season.

? Bogut has had double-doubles in nine of the 12 games this season, including five games in a row, to rank first in the nation in that category. He has 22 double-doubles in his career.

? Bogut has scored in double figures all 12 games this season, bringing his double-figure scoring streak to 14 consecutive games dating back to last season.

? He has six 20-point games this season, including five games in a row, to bring his career total to nine.

? In the NCAA statistical rankings released on Dec. 21, Bogut was 18th in field goal percentage (64.0), 12th in rebounds per game (10.4) and 46th in blocked shots per game (2.1).

? Bogut had his sixth 20-point game and his ninth double-double of the season with 22 points (10-18 FG, 2-2 FT) and 17 boards against Weber State on Tuesday. He also had three assists, two blocked shots and three steals. His 17 rebounds tied the 14th-best single-game mark in school history, which he also got a piece of on Jan. 24, 2004 against New Mexico.

Markson Making His Mark
Junior forward Bryant Markson (6-6, 190) has been elevated to a staring role at small forward in the absence of Richard Chaney with a broken left hand. The Monrovia, Calif., native is fifth on the team in scoring (8.0 ppg) and tied for third in rebounding (3.2 rpg). He has started three games this season and played in all 12, averaging 20.9 minutes per game

? Markson has scored in double figures in six games this season, including four of the last six.

? In his first start since Chaney was sidelined, Markson had 12 points against Weber State on Tuesday, making all five shots from the field and both free throw attempts. He also had a rebound and an assist in a season-high tying 27 minutes.

? Markson had a career-high 15 points against Montana-Western on Dec. 8. He made all six shots from the field and converted 3-of-4 free throws.

Getting Defensive
One of the trademarks of Utah basketball in recent years has been a stifling half-court defense. Since the 1989-90 season, Utah has finished in the top 30 in the nation 12 times in scoring defense, 10 times in rebound margin, eight times in field goal percentage defense and eight times in scoring margin.

? Utah has not allowed an opponent to score 80 points in 140 consecutive games that have ended in regulation. The last team to score 80 points on the Utes in a 40-minute game was Wyoming (88) on Feb. 28, 2000 in Laramie, Wyo.

? The Utes have outrebounded the opposition in nine of the 12 games this season, and had a push in one other game (vs. Stony Brook in the season opener), going 9-1 in those contests. The Utes have a +8.0 rebound margin per game this season. That continues a trend from last season when the Utes outrebounded 30 of 33 opponents.

? Utah has allowed just three opponents to shoot better than 50 percent from the field this season: Washington (53.4 in a loss), Utah State (65.0 in a loss) and Cal Poly (54.5 in a win).

? In the NCAA statistical rankings released on Dec. 21, Utah ranked 51st in scoring defense (60.9 ppg) and 35th in rebound margin (+7.4 rpg).

Utes Tough At Home In The Huntsman Center
Utah is 216-19 (.919) in the Huntsman Center over the last 16 seasons and has never lost back-to-back home games. The Utes are 6-0 at home this season.

? The Utes have captured 38 of their last 40 games at home with their only two losses coming to Colorado State on March 6, 2003, ending a 16-game home winning streak, and a 59-57 loss to Air Force on Feb. 21, terminating a string of 15 consecutive home wins.

? Dating back to the 1993-94 season, the Utes have won 154 of their last 165 games in the Jon M. Huntsman Center.

? Utah has won 30 consecutive nonconference games in the Huntsman Center, last falling to Utah State (78-65) on Nov. 23, 2001.

? In conference home games over the last 10 years, Utah is 71-4 (.947). That mark ranks second-best in the nation over that period to Kansas, which is 74-4 (.949).
