Utah vs. Montana-Western Series Notes
? Utah and Montana-Western have never met.
? The Utes are 27-2 all-time against NAIA schools, including a 26-2 record at home.
? The NAIA school Utah has faced the most is Westminster College in Salt Lake City, which is a member with Montana-Western in the Frontier Conference. Utah is 6-1 against Westminster College.
Boasting Of Bogut
Sophomore forward Andrew Bogut (7-0, 240) has been named to the 2004 John R. Wooden Preseason All-America Team and a preseason candidate for the Naismith Award. Last season, Bogut was honored as the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year, second team all-MWC and second team All-District 13 by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). He also made the CollegeInsider.com all-freshman team.
? Bogut has had double-doubles in four of the six games this season to bring his career total to 18. He has scored in double figures in all six games. Bogut leads the Utes in scoring (17.8 ppg), rebounds (10.8 rpg), field goal percentage (61.8) and blocked shots (12). He is also second in assists (3.0 apg) and shooting 70.6 percent from the free throw line.
? Against Southern Utah on Nov. 30, he had his 21st career double-figure rebounds game and his 18th career double-double.
? Bogut had three blocked shots against Southern Utah. It was the ninth time in his Ute career that Bogut had at least three blocked shots in a game.
? After leading Utah to a 2-1 record in the Great Alaska Shootout, Bogut was named the Mountain West Conference Player of the Week (Nov. 22-28). In the three games, Bogut averaged 19.3 points, 10.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.0 blocks and 1.0 steals per game, while shooting .625 (20-of-32) from the field and .750 (18-of-24) from the free throw line. He was named to the all-tournament team.
Jackson Back In Action
Senior guard Marc Jackson (6-1, 175) has rejoined the team for his senior year after electing to take off the 2003-04 season. Through six games this season, the Salt Lake City native has scored in double figures four times. He leads the Utes in three-point percentage (60.0), making 12-of-20 from beyond the arc. Jackson is second on the team in scoring (12.8 ppg) and second in free throw percentage (89.3).
? Jackson had the fourth 20-point game of his career against Stony Brook on Nov. 19, missing his career high of 21 by one point.
? He had the 17th double-figure scoring game of his career with 15 points against Utah State on Dec. 4. Jackson went 5-for-6 from the field, 3-for-4 from three-point range and 2-for-2 at the free throw line.
Getting It Done At The Free Throw Line
The Utes have done an excellent job of getting to the free throw line and converting this season. Through six games, Utah is shooting 75.6 percent from the charity stripe, leading the Mountain West Conference in that category. The Utes have made 99 free throws while their opponents have attempted just 83.
? Five Utes are hitting over 70 percent from the line this season: Tim Drisdom (91.7), Marc Jackson (89.3), Richard Chaney (81.0), Justin Hawkins (72.7) and Andrew Bogut (70.6).
Getting Defensive
One of the trademarks of Utah basketball in recent years has been a stifling half-court defense. Since the 1989-90 season, Utah has finished in the top 30 in the nation 12 times in scoring defense, 10 times in rebound margin, eight times in field goal percentage defense and eight times in scoring margin.
? Utah has not allowed an opponent to score 80 points in 134 consecutive games that have ended in regulation. The last team to score 80 points on the Utes in a 40-minute game was Wyoming (88) on Feb. 28, 2000 in Laramie, Wyo.
? The Utes have outrebounded the opposition in four of the six games this season, and had a push in one other game (vs. Stony Brook in the season opener). The Utes have a +7.0 rebound margin per game this season. That continues a trend from last season when the Utes outrebounded 30 of 33 opponents.
? Utah has also allowed just two opponents to shoot better than 50 percent from the field this season: Washington (53.4 percent in a loss) and Utah State (65.0 percent in a loss).
? In the final 2003-04 NCAA statistical rankings, Utah ranked fifth in scoring defense (57.4 ppg) and fifth in rebound margin (+7.4 rpg).
