PALO ALTO, Calif. - Stanford scored three first-half goals to defeat No. 24 Utah 3-0 in the season opener for both teams Friday night at Maloney Field.
The Cardinal, which returns seven starters from last year's NCAA Tournament team, jumped on the Utes early. Stanford (1-0-0) scored in the first minute, got its second goal at the 30:20 mark, and added a third 13 seconds before halftime. Stanford outshot the Utes 5-1 in the first half.
Senior forward Marcie Ward, who sat out last season as a redshirt after getting 10 goals in 2002, scored the first two Cardinal goals. Natalie Sanderson assisted on the first, while Ward beat Ute keeper Ashley Mason on her own for the second. Leah Tapscott scored the final goal after the ball was crossed twice in front of the cage. Hayley Hunt and Lizzy George were both credited with assists.
Utah (0-1-0) regrouped to hold the Cardinal scoreless on just one shot in the second half. Both teams also had a pair of corner kicks in the second half.
Tracy Stratton Garner and Carisse Winegar had a shot a piece for Utah. Mason made one save in the first half and played the entire 90 minutes.
The Utes fly back from the West Coast to host Gonzaga on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Ute Field.
