SALT LAKE CITY -
Each week, a Utah gymnast submits an entry for the Utah Gymnastics Journal. This week's edition is provided by senior Annabeth Eberle.
Welcome back Red Rock fans! Finally -- the new season is here. It couldn't have started soon enough for me...how about you?
We all had a great Christmas break. Everyone went home except Gritt and Gabi. Gabi stayed here with friends and Gritt went to Minnesota to be with her fiancée and his family. The break seemed short since we only had nine days at home with our families. But we had to get back because we had a little meet to get ready for.
We traveled back on December 26 and started our training on the 27th. The first couple of workouts were a little sloppy, but things began to come back together pretty quickly. Since classes didn't start until January 10, no one else was around, so we enjoyed each other's company on New Year's Eve and just hung out to celebrate the coming of 2005.
We had New Year's Day off and then on Sunday had a little red vs. white intra-squad meet to help us get ready for the beginning of the season. It went well and we all felt ready for UCLA. Then on Tuesday afternoon Greg treated us to a movie, "Meet the Fockers." That lightened things up! Of course that was after we had spinning and circuit training in the morning! We had another intra-squad on Wednesday. That one went even better. WE WERE READY! Thursday, Greg issued us all of our new apparel. It is SO-O-O neat. We can't wait to show you all of our new stuff.
Finally, the long awaited January 7 meet was here. Everyone was excited and ready to get the season underway. We had so much fun the whole night and THANK YOU to our wonderful 10,064 fans! We could not have asked for a better start to our season. Everyone did a great job as we took back our home floor and avenged our loss to UCLA two years ago. Both teams looked fantastic for the first meet of the year.
One funny thing that happened at the end of the meet was that we all decided to wear sunglasses during Katie's "Bad to the Bone" routine on floor. So when she walked out onto the floor we all garnered our glasses and slid them on. No one knew about it. Not even Greg! It was hilarious. I heard some of our fans have picked up on it and plan to bring sunglasses from now on and wear them whenever Katie does floor.
Saturday morning it was back to spinning and weights. As much fun as we had on Friday, we all realize that it was only the beginning and we've still got a lot of work to do. It just seems a little easier now that we get to compete every week, especially when we are at home in from of our fans. WE LOVE YOU!
Now we're back in school and training hard for our next meet. We are all looking forward to Utah State this Friday night! Hope to see you there!
GO UTES!
