The Runnin' Utes open Mountain West Conference play against New Mexico on Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 7:07 p.m. (MST) in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The game will be televised by KJZZ-TV 14. Utah then plays BYU on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 1:05 p.m. (MST) in Provo.

Quickly On Utah
The Runnin' Utes (6-4) close out their nonconference schedule against High Point (6-2) on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. (MST) in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The game will be broadcast on Hot Ticket 700 (KALL-AM) and the Utah Sports Network.

Utah has dropped four of its last games after beginning the season 4-0. While playing three games in six days before the Christmas break, Utah lost to No. 24 Arizona, 73-43, on Dec. 17 and defeated Adams State, 68-51, on Dec. 19 in Salt Lake City before losing to Washington State, 69-42, on Dec. 22 at Key Arena in Seattle, Wash.

Senior forward Bryant Markson (6-7, 198), a preseason all-Mountain West Conference pick, leads the Utes in scoring (15.5 ppg), assists (2.9 apg) and steals (16), and is second in rebounds (5.5 rpg). Markson is shooting 75.5 percent at the free throw line. Sophomore guard Johnnie Bryant (6-0, 190), a junior college transfer in his first season with the Utes, is second on the team in scoring (10.7 ppg) and is averaging 3.4 rebounds per game. Bryant is also shooting 41.0 percent (16-of-39) from three-point range and 90.5 percent from the free throw line. Freshman center Luke Nevill (7-1, 250) is third on the team in scoring (9.4 ppg) and leads the way in rebounding (5.7 rpg).

Utah ranked 42nd in the NCAA in rebound margin (+6.7) and 71st in field goal percentage (47.1) as of Dec. 20. The Utes currently have a +5.4 rebound margin and are shooting 46.6 percent from the field.

Scouting The Panthers
High Point is 6-2 on the season and 2-1 on opponents home courts this season. The Panthers, who haven't played since Dec. 17, are riding a three-game winning streak. High Point defeated Ferrum College, 103-61, at home on Dec. 3, then won at Elon, 73-71, on Dec. 7 and at Longwood, 88-72, on Dec. 17. The Big South Conference members will play at UVSC on Friday before leaving the Beehive State.

Sophomore guard Arizona Reid (6-5, 205) leads the Panthers in scoring (22.5 ppg) and rebounding (8.6 rpg). Reid is shooting 82.4 percent from the free throw line and 57.7 percent from the field. Senior guard Akeem Scott (6-1, 180) is second on the team in scoring (14.5 ppg), connecting on 25.0 percent of his three-point attempts (8-for-32), and has a team-best 24 steals. Senior forward Issa Konare (6-8, 230) is the third Panther averaging double figures in scoring (11.9 ppg), is second in rebounding (4.9 rpg), and has a team-best 14 blocked shots. Junior guard Landon Quick (6-1, 175) leads the Panthers in assists (4.0 apg).

Head Coach Bart Lundy
Bart Lundy is 38-31 in his third season at High Point. He has a 153-70 record in eight years as a head coach. He engineered one of the nation's best turnarounds in 2003-04 while leading HPU to a 19-11 mark and a spot in the Big South title game. For his efforts, Lundy was named the 2004 National Rookie Coach of the Year by collegeinsider.com. In his second year, HPU posted a 13-18 record but finished tied for fourth in the Big South.

Lundy came to High Point after five highly-successful seasons as the head coach at Queens University of Charlotte, where he led the Royals to a 115-39 record and a pair of NCAA Division II Elite Eight appearances, including a trip to the Final Four in 2003.

Utah vs. High Point Series Notes
? The Utes and Panthers meet for the third time on Wednesday night. Utah won both of the previous meetings.

? Utah defeated High Point 78-69 last season on Nov. 26 in the consolation semifinals of the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage, Alaska.

? In the first game of the series, the Runnin' Utes won 73-42 on Dec. 30, 1998 in Salt Lake City.

Last Meeting
Marc Jackson scored 18 points as Utah beat High Point 78-69 in the second round of the Great Alaska Shootout last season on Nov. 26.

Andrew Bogut added 16, Bryan Markson had 13 and Justin Hawkins scored 12 for the Utes, who shot 25-for-51 from the floor.

The Panthers kept the game close through much of the second half, coming within three points (52-49) after an 11-2 run capped by Akeem Scott's two free throws with 12:12 to play.

But Utah was able to hold onto its lead down the stretch on the shooting of Hawkins and two key three-point plays by Bogut.

High Point was 23-for-55 from the floor, including shooting 9-for-23 from behind the three-point line.

Utah outrebounded the Panthers 35-26, with Bogut pulling in 11. The Utes were 7-for-12 from behind the three-point line and made 21-of-27 free throws.

The Panthers were led by Akeem's 20 points. Danny Gathings and Jerry Echenique added 16 points apiece.

Utah jumped out to a 17-7 lead on an 11-0 run and led 39-32 at the half.

Game #10 Rewind
Randy Green scored 15 points and Robbie Cowgill had 14, leading Washington State to a 69-42 victory last Thursday night over Utah in the Cougar Hardwood Classic at Seattle's Key Arena.

Luke Nevill, a 7-foot-1 freshman center from Australia, came off the bench to lead Utah with 10 points, all in the second half. The Cougars (7-2) notched their third win in a row in impressive fashio n and ended an 11-game losing streak in their series with Utah (6-4), winning for only the second time in 14 games against the Utes.

Green gave the Cougars a 29-point lead (43-14) when he made a four-point play to open the second half. He hit a three-pointer and made a foul shot after being fouled by Shaun Green.

The Cougars led 39-14 at halftime after a 13-0 run that featured two three-pointers by Josh Akognon put them ahead 23-7 with 8:32 left. The Utes shot just 6-for-16 in the first half.

Cowgill scored Washington State's first 10 points in the first 6:19 and wound up with a dozen in the opening half.

The Cougars outshot the Utes 55.1-38.9 percent from the field and made 7-of-15 three-pointers. Wazzu also outrebounded Utah 26-20.

Notables From Game #10
? Utah scored a season-low 42 points versus Washington State. The Utes also had season low marks in field goals (14) and field goals attempted (36).

? The Utes' 42 points against Washington State was its lowest total since getting 41 points against UNLV in Las Vegas on March 14, 2003 in the MWC Tournament semifinals.

? Utah's 14 points in the first half against Washington State was its lowest scoring half since getting 13 points against Connecticut in the Preseason NIT on Nov. 28, 2003.
