Walnut, Calif. - Select athletes from the University of Utah outdoor track and field squad traveled to California to compete in the Mt. SAC Relays and the Pomona Invitational last weekend. Mount San Antonio Community College played host to the 46th annual Mt. Sac Relays, while Pomona College hosted the Pomona Invitational in Claremont, Calif.
Senior Candice Workman-Ekberg had a spectacular weekend, setting a new discus school record at the Pomona Invitational. Ekberg boasted a 47.47m mark, good enough for seventh place and an NCAA regional qualifying mark. The senior also finished sixth in the shot put (14.37m), another NCAA regional qualifying mark.
At the Mt. Sac Relays, she finished seventh in the shot put (14.19m) and eighth in the discus (43.94m). Ekberg ranks second in the Mountain West Conference in the shot put and fourth in the discus.
Junior Vanessa Mortensen had strong performance in the hammer throw at both meets. At the Mt. Sac Relays, Mortensen finished fourth throwing 58.76m. At the Pomona Invitational, she threw 59.78m, good enough for sixth place.
Sophomore Amanda Feigt moved up within the conference rankings at the Mt. Sac Relays. Feigt finished fourth in the long jump, posting an impressive 6.01m mark. Her mark is an NCAA regional qualifying mark and ranks third in the conference.
Sophomore Dustin Cutrer posted a season best in the javelin at the Pomona Invitational. His mark of 56.60m earned a fifth-place finish and ranks seventh in the MWC.
