SALT LAKE CITY - Freshman forward Jen Christoffers didn't take long to make an impact on the college level. In just her third game, the Phoenix native scored two goals to lead Utah to a 3-0 win in its home opener over UVSC on Saturday afternoon at Ute Field.
Junior Hailey Marsh also scored a goal for the Utes, who improved to 3-0-0 and are ranked 22nd in the nation by Soccer Buzz. UVSC fell to 0-2-0. Utah, behind the goalkeeping of Ashley Mason, has held all three opponents scoreless this season.
Utah outshot the Wolverines 10-4 in the first half but didn't score until the 41st minute. McKenzie Joyner and Kim Lloyd connected to set up Christoffers in the box. She fired an amazing 20-yard smash from the left side of the penalty box over UVSC keeper Jessica Clement to give Utah a 1-0 lead.
Christoffers also played a part in Utah's second goal in the 72nd minute. She sent a nice ball to Marsh, who fired it into the lower right corner of the net for her first goal of the season.
Christoffers' second goal came off a corner kick. After Whitney Dorsey arced the ball in from the right corner, Christoffers touched it past Clement for the score.
Ashley Mason made three saves in the first 76:28 before giving relief to freshman Emalee Rogers with a 3-0 lead. Mason also blanked the opposition in Utah's first two games.
The Utes outshot the Wolverines 21-5 and had a 4-2 advantage in corners. Utah was wistled for 10 fouls to six for UVSC.
Amanda Feigt had a game-high five shots for Utah, forcing two saves. Clement made five saves for the Wolverines.
On a disappointing note for the Utes, sophomore defender Katie Battazzo, who has worked the past two years to come back from a serious knee injury, reinjured her knee early in the second half and had to be helped off the field. She was a first team all-Mountain West selection in 2002 and has played in all three games this season.
Utah continues a four-game homestand against Idaho on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Ute Field.
