NATIONAL RANKINGS
Due to a miscommunication, incorrect national gymnastics rankings were released on Jan. 16. The revised rankings, which are based on total season average, were issued on Jan. 17 and produced a three-position leap for Utah. The new top five has Georgia (195.762 average) at No. 1, followed by No. 2 Michigan (195.675), No. 3 Utah (195.250), No. 4 Alabama (195.200) and No. 5 Stanford (194.950). Utah's opponent this week, Nebraska, is No. 6 after a short-lived stay tied for No. 4. The complete corrected rankings can be found on page three of this release.
UTES IN THE RANKINGS
Junior All-American Nicolle Ford is the only Ute in the top 10 in the new rankings. Ford is tied for No. 2 on beam (9.85) and No. 4 on bars (9.887). She is ranked sixth in the all-around (39.20). Utah is ranked No. 2 on vault (49.100 average), No. 3 on beam (48.662), No. 5 on floor (48.887) and No. 15 on bars (48.600).
LAST WEEK
Freshman Kristina Baskett led Utah to a 195.625-193.325 win over No. 18 Washington in Seattle. Baskett, from nearby Normandy Park, Wash., tied for first on the vault with Ashley Postell (9.90) and scored a 9.85 on bars and a 9.775 on floor. She saved perhaps her best effort for a non-scoring routine--receiving a 9.90 in exhibition on the balance beam. Had she made the starting lineup, the Utes would not have been forced to count a fall on the beam. Postell won her first all-around try of the year despite a fall on bars, scoring a 38.80, and also won the balance beam (9.875). Nicolle Ford was held to two events due to a wrist injury and won the bar title with a 9.90. Jessica Duke picked up her first career victory on the floor, scoring a 9.85.
UTE NOTES
Sophomore Ashley Postell ripped off a vault rarely seen in the collegiate ranks in Seattle last week, scoring a 9.90 for her Yurchenko with a one half twist on, front pike with a half twist off. She hadn't performed that vault in competition since her days as an Elite ... Sophomore Jessica Duke set a career-mark with her winning floor routine last week at Washington, scoring a 9.85 ... Senior Natalie Nicoloff competed on bars for the first time since her freshman year and scored a 9.675 to lead the Utes off in Seattle. Nicoloff is expected to lead-off again this week ... Junior Nicolle Ford says she will return to the all-around this week although her wrist injury has not improved. Ford has Utah's top all-around (39.20) and bar (9.90) scores of the year ... Ute event winners this season are Ashley Postell (3), Kristina Baskett (2), Ford (1), Duke (1) and Gritt Hofmann (1) ... Baskett will replace fellow freshman Nina Kim in the all-around lineup. Kim has fallen in both floor routines, although she has been cool under pressure on her other events: Against both UCLA and UW, the freshman has come up after the two competitors before her fell (bars at UCLA and beam at Washington) and nailed her routine.
