UTAH AND THE RANKINGS
After beating No. 6 Nebraska last Friday, Utah moved up one place in the rankings to No. 2, trailing only Georgia. Complete rankings can be found on page 3 of this release. Utah's best event ranking is No. 2 on both vault (49.142 average) and floor (48.983). The Utes rank No. 3 on beam (48.625) and are tied for 12th on bars (48.667). Individuals in the rankings include all-arounders Kristina Baskett--No. 3 in the all-around with a 39.325 average--and Nicolle Ford--No. 5 with a 39.237 average. Ford is tied for No. 6 on bars with a 9.892 average.
LAST WEEK
A home-opening crowd of 12,131 was on hand to see Ute freshman Kristina Baskett place first in her all-around debut to lead Utah to a 195.75-193.00 victory over No. 3 Nebraska. Baskett, who edged junior Nicolle Ford (39.275) and sophomore Ashley Postell (39.125) in the all-around, also won the floor exercise with a 9.90. Ford captured the uneven bars with a 9.90.
UTE NOTES
Utah first-year assistant Jeff Graba was an assistant at Utah State in 2004 and '05 ... All-arounder Nicolle Ford will sit out of vault and floor this Friday to rest her injured wrist. Filling in on floor for Ford will be freshman Nina Kim, who went all-around in the first two meets but was dropped from the floor lineup last week after falling against UCLA and Washington. Kim "hit" an exhibition routine on floor last week ... Ford's replacement on vault will be Gabriella Onodi, who will lead off on three of four events (vault, beam and floor) ... In addition to going 23-of-24 last Friday against Nebraska, the Utes were 6-of-6 in exhibition routines. It appears that Katie Kivisto was the biggest beneficiary of the exhibition opportunity: She is projected to start this week on bars, where the lead-off position remains unsettled. Senior Dominique D'Oliveira held the starting job as a freshman and sophomore, before Kivisto took it away as a freshman last year. Kivisto fell in this year's opener, giving senior Natalie Nicoloff the chance to start. Nicoloff is 2-of-2 on the event this year, but Kivisto impressed the coaches with her un-scored routine against Nebraska ... Ute event winners this season are Kristina Baskett (4), Ashley Postell (3), Nicolle Ford (2), Duke (1) and Gritt Hofmann (1).
