Utah opens its exhibition season against Brock University on Friday at 7:07 p.m. (MST) in the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
SCOUTING BROCK UNIVERSITY
Brock University is an institution of 17,000 located in St. Catharines, Ontario. It competes in the OUA conference.
The Badgers have a 7-1 record. They opened their schedule Sept. 2 by hosting an exhibition game against 2006 NCAA champion Florida. Brock fell to the Gators 107-51. The Badgers will play at BYU on Thursday night before facing the Utes on Friday.
In its last outing on Sunday afternoon, Brock defeated the UPEI Panthers 92-69 in the final game of the Laval Tournament. Senior guard Brad Rootes was named the Tournament MVP with Scott Murray being named a Tournament All-Star. Rootes averaged 23.0 points per game in the tournament and connected on 27-for-33 from the charity stripe. Murray averaged 10.7 points per game including 8-for-18 from beyond the arc.
Against UPEI, senior forward Chris Keith led all scorers matching his career high of 31 points. He also pulled down a season-high 11 rebounds for a double-double. Also in double figures was Rootes with 21 points and sophomore guard Mike Kemp who recorded 17 points. Murray finished with nine points in the victory.
Ken Murray is in his 17th year as head coach of the Badgers. He led Brock to the CIS National Championships for the second straight season in 2004-05 with a 30-7 record.
WHO'S BACK
Utah returns four starters--none of whom are seniors--and two other lettermen from last season. The Utes bring back three of the top four scorers, two of three best rebounders and the leading assists producer from last season. Utah went 14-15 overall in 2005-06 and placed sixth in the Mountain West with a 6-10 record.
Junior guard Johnnie Bryant (6-0, 180) earned all-Mountain West Conference honorable mention in his first season with the Utes in 2005-06. Bryant led the Utes in scoring (13.1 ppg) and assists (2.4 apg) while averaging 32.7 minutes per game. The Oakland, Calif., native also shot 45.9 percent (68-for-148) from three-point range and 83.3 percent from the free throw line, leading the Utes in both categories.
Sophomore center Luke Nevill (7-1, 265) also earned all-MWC honorable mention in 2005-06. Earning a starting role in 12 games late in the season, Nevill was third on the team in scoring (11.6 ppg) and led the Utes in rebounds (6.6 rpg) and blocked shots (27). The Perth, Australia, native also averaged 23.5 minutes per game and shot 53.2 percent from the field.
Sophomore forward Shaun Green (6-8, 208) made 24 starts and averaged 26.3 minutes per game as a true freshman. A solid all-around crontributor, Green ranked fourth on the team in scoring (6.4 ppg), third in rebounding (3.8 rpg), third in assists (2.1 apg), second in steals (31) and second in blocked shots (11). Green, a native of Salt Lake City, shot 38.1 percent (43-for-113) from three-point range.
Junior guard Chris Grant (6-3, 200), a former walk-on, averaged 17.0 minutes per game and made 16 starts. The Salt Lake City native averaged 2.5 points and 2.2 rebounds per game. He was Utah's assists leader (2.9 apg) in conference play.
The only senior on the team is guard Ricky Johns (6-3, 190), who transfered before last season from Monroe College in New York. Johns averaged 3.8 points, 1.5 rebounds per game. He played in 26 games with one start, averaging 14.2 minutes per contest.
Sophomore guard Lawrence Borha (6-3, 205) played in 28 games with seven starts in his first season at the U. Borha, from Staten Island, N.Y., averaged 3.7 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game.
AFTER THIS
The Runnin' Utes play the last on their two exhibition games against Montana Tech on Monday, Nov. 6 at 7:07 p.m. (MST) in the Huntsman Center. Utah opens the regular season at home against Southern Utah on Friday, Nov. 10 at 7:07 p.m. (MST).
