SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Northwestern ran its Princeton-style offense to perfection and shot 73 percent from 3-point range--a record by a Ute opponent--to defeat Utah 77-44 in the fifth-place game of the San Juan Shootout on Thursday afternoon at Mario Morales Coliseum.
Kevin Coble made all five of his 3-point shots and hit 8-of-11 field goals overall to score a game-high 22 points for Northwestern. Tim Doyle had 17 points and game-highs of seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Shaun Green led Utah (5-7) with 14 points, connecting on 2-of-4 3-pointers. Luke Nevill had his lowest point total of the season with nine points, and Stephen Weigh came off the bench to add eight.
Northwestern (8-3) shot 76 percent from the field and made all six of its 3-point attempts in the first half, but Utah was still within striking distance at 41-30. However, the game got away from the Utes quickly at the start of the second half.
The Wildcats went on a 13-5 run out of halftime and led by 19 (54-35) with 13:25 to play. After Luka Drca scored a layup 10 seconds later, the Utes wouldn't score for the next nine and half minutes allowing Northwestern to open up a 68-37 cushion with 4:59 remaining. Utah scored just 14 points in the second half, which equals its second-lowest point total in a half since 1990.
Utah shot a season-low 40 percent from the field, made just 6-of-21 3-pointers and committed a season-high 18 turnovers. Northwestern connected on 11-of-15 3-point attempts and shot 69 percent from the field overall. It was the best field goal shooting percentage by a Utah opponent since Air Force, which also runs the Princeton-style offense, shot 68 percent last season on Jan. 19.
The Utes went 1-2 in the San Juan Shootout and now have a week off before resuming their schedule after the Christmas holiday. Utah plays its final nonconference game against Albany on Thursday, Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. (MST) in the Huntsman Center.
